Got money to spend, go for the best = 2/3 x GHL Mitras

Want good fixture but tighter on budget = 2x 120W Razor 16k

Want good fixture but tight on budget + only keeping Zoas/LPS and just a little SPS = 1x 160w Razor 16k

Want good fixture but very tight on budget = Evergrow Fixture (slightly cheaper than razor after accounting Shipping fees IIRC)

Just to clarify, the above is all based on my opinion. The above fixtures are the only ones i would consider if im buidlng a 422.

Hmmm why GHL Mitras is best? Is it because it is the most expensive? Just curious.

5x2.5x1.5ft Rimless Dream Tank (06/03/12)
Skimmer - Reefoctupus

Return Pump - 1 x Eheim 1264, 1 x water blaster 7k
Wavemaker - 2 x mp40es
Chiller - Daikin compressor with coil drop in

Just to clarify again, this is all based on my personal LED research :

AI Vega Blue -

4 - Cree XM-L Cool White

8 - Cree XP-E Royal Blue

4 - Cree XP-E Blue

4 - OSRAM OSLON Deep Blue

Only cool white and blue. No neutral/warm white and no violets.

Vega color -

  • 4 - Cree XM-L Cool White
    8 - Cree XP-E Royal Blue
    2 - Cree XP-E Blue
2 - OSRAM OSLON Deep Blue
    2 - Cree XP-E Green
2 - OSRAM OSLON Deep Red

At least there's Green and deep red to fill the spectrum but once again, Neutral White or warm white should be used to supplement with cool white. and no Violets are used.

AI Hydra

4 Cree XT-E Cool White (> 70 CRI)

2 OSRAM OSLON Deep Red

2 Cree XP-E Green

4 Cree XT-E Royal Blue

4 OSRAM OSLON Very Deep Blue

2 SemiLED 415nm Violet

2 Edison Opto 400nm UV

Finally the new AI Hydra has the best spectrum, with 2 kinds of violets. But still only cool white are used.

If anyone were to consider AI, Hydra would be the best IMO.

Ecotech Radion -

White: 8 Cree XT-E Cool White (5W each)
Red: 4 Osram Oslon SSL Hyper Red (3W each)
Green: 4 Cree XP-E Green (3W each)
Blue: 8 Cree XP-E Blue (3W each)
Royal Blue: 8 Cree XT-E Royal Blue (5W each)

No Violets and only cool white.

Radion pro is better with the spread of better spectrum.

GHL Mitras LX 6100HV

12 x Cree XP-E blue

12 x Cree XT-E cool white

12 x Cree XT-E royal blue

6 x Cree XT-E neutral white

6 x Osram Oslon SSL true green

6 x Osram Oslon SSL yellow

6 x Osram Oslon SSL red

6 x Osram Oslon SSL hyperred

6 x hyper violet 425 nm

With the mix of cool white and neutral white as well as other colors, i would say this is the best fixture. and also 8 separate dimmers.

Maxspect Razor 160w 16k

A Cree XLamp® XT-E 6 382 lm @ 1300mA

Cool White 8000K

A Cree XLamp® XT-E 6 1520mW @ 1300mA

Royal Blue 450-465nm

A Cree XLamp® XT-E 6 294 lm @ 1300mA

Warm White 3000K

B Cree XLamp® XP-E 9 63 lm @ 860mA

Blue 465-485nm

B Cree XLamp® XT-E 6 1520mW @ 1300mA

Royal Blue 450-465nm

B Epileds Dual-Core 6 1100mW @ 1300mA

Super Actinic 410-420nm

Though it lacks the red and green LED which the above fixtures all have, but it have much better whites. With cool white and warm white, it also covers the range of the green and red spectrum.

Once again, based on my own research, if i have the money, i will definitely buy the GHL Mitras, If not, the Razor 16k is the one to go. Im not saying that Radion or AI are not good. The radion pros are good but they are not worth the money. AI Hydra looks promising but once again the price tag.

If my above info is wrong, please feel free to correct me. i may have used the info from the wrong source.

I don't think 1 x razor 160w 16k is enough. At least 2 set for a 4 feet. You might need to supplement some t5 to cover a wider area

Soo using 2 razor still need to supplment with T5?

I thought the spread would be enough.. Hmm

i use 160w 16k razor for my 4x2x1.2ft tank. and the spread is very good. i have to keep my light set 17-20" above the water level though.

But then, im only having max A:70%, B:85% now in order not to bleach my SPS.

Here's my tank

can see the spread.

West coast aquarium show tank also uses single 160w 16 for his 422, he hangs pretty high up as well and keeping SPS at the top with LPS/Zoas at the bottom sand bed.

TS, maybe you can tell us what you want to keep.would be better to narrow down the selection.

look into mixed reef... just moved from softies to lps.. next set will be sps.. but thats gonna take another 2-3 mth.. need to have a lil more experience

go for 2x120W 160w 16k. you'll be more and more poisoned by SPS and a single 160w 16k will restrict alot places in ur 422 tank.

if u meant for a tank that is 2ft tall, you'll have to hang it high to cover the whole area. or you can choose to hang it lower, then both sides will be pretty dark or have shadowing. Can go down to west coast aquarium to check out their display tank.
