old tank syndrome

my total water volume is app 400l
doing weekly water change(20l, 5%) for the past 2.5 years, using tap water with anti-chlorine
thinking of doing a major water change(100l, 25%), using rodi water
does major water change prevent old tank syndrome?
will major water change bring more harm than good?
thanks

My 450 litres SPS dominated used to do 80-120 litres water change on monthly basis with no ill effect as long as the KH component is observe. I have done 50% water change during tank overhaul, meaning removing all livestocks, rocks and substrate within a day with no casualty 4 years back but then only a handful of SPS.

thanks for your prompt reply

my objective is to reduce accumulation of chloride, heavy metal, etc and also to replenish elements
my main concern is will major water change bring more harm than good?
i have bad experience in doing major water change, maybe due to using tap water
cheers

Can do major water change using NSW, there are still a few LFS providing such services.

nsw is no no for me

any method to make rodi water without rodi unit?

iirc someone make rodi water using pump and di resin

cheers

Buy Distilled water loh.

RO/DI or DI water need slow flow to a point of trickling in order to effectively filter tap water. So if you are doing major water change, you will need to prepare few days ahead.

Some distilled water company are happy to sell on ad-hoc basis.

Just wanted to address your concerned. IMHE early last year I had done more than 60% total volume of my tank system. Total water change of my DT by NSW and have taken half of the live rock out (that my mistake I think). I discovered my water parameter start to whacked till about more than 6 month things come to stable.

As long as you don't loose your content of the colonised bacteria on you live rock even the wall or sand bed of your current existing bio stability then it should be OK.

Just my 2 cent.

Mix reef-Main tank 3x2.5x2.5ftA

TI 3ft 8tube

Hitachi compressor unit 1HP

1 x AP- 702 Deltec

1 x Coral Lab CR with Ph controller; 1X AquaMedic Kalk Reactor top off

Baby fish dosing kh/Sr&Kcl/mg

DI water thru kalkwasser

1 x Skimz Fr with BRS gfo

2 x Rio 32hF main pump

1 x Pinpt Orp monitor

1 X Pinpt Ph monitor

Aquamedic wave maker

Sump 3x1.5ft plumbed together with;

1.5ft cube live rock

Frag tank 5x1x1ft

NSW got its downsides. Some lower Ca, some lower Mg. If your tank is populated with spses, I wouldn't play with NSW as part of overhaul.

Instead I'll prefer going saltmix with distilled water though you might need a few days before hand to prepare. .

Let me know if you need help

Happy Reefing,

actually chlorine is fine. If you worry about it, use some seachem prime to renove the chloramine and let your water stand overnight before putting into tank.

Nonetheless it's good to do an overhaul once a while. Resetting the system to prevent overlogging of those deadweight..

Happy Reefing,

Marc J.
