Using the programming language Processing, he succeeded.  According to Kemper, the initial version was made to work with the Microsoft Kinect and is shown in the video below:

In addition, he created a webpage where people online can also play with the effect as well. Go to http://distantshape.com/experiments/squid/ to check it out. Move your mouse cursor over the "chromophores" and click around to see the chromophores expand and pulsate.
