Modified WeiPro

Hi. Has some spare pumps and a Weipro skimmer for my Lion Tank. Know the H&S uses needle wheel and inject the air directly into the pump and let the impeller chop it up. So just wanted to have some fun and see if by modifying a weipro by removing the Venturi and injecting the air dirrectly into the pump to see the results.

The pump used is a dophin 708. More than enough to drive the skimmer.

After running for 20min. bubbles starting to form on top.

Notice the bubbles are finer and in much greater numbers than when the venturi was used.

for a moment i tot you modify the pump's impeller to a needlewheel like what barra did...hehehe

yeah...it adds more air into the skimmer when you use a strong air pump..hehe

diy like wad barrucuda did.. then pump the airinto the inlet of the pump.. i'm sure you'll get much more fine bubbles.. one of this days i free gonna try it out

The body is totally filled with bubbles!! The big bubbles you see is attached to the skimmer body outside and not inside. The inside quite fine. wonder if any way to make it finer.

The impeller has been changed. And no air pump is used. air is sucked in via venturi effect just at the inlet.

yr bubbles not fine enough, try to make a needlewheel .. it will produce finer bubbles and you can hook up to a air pump to fully blast it until the return is full of bubbles also

Correction. I did the change like wat barra did with another pump. But wanted to try it without that first without that, see the results and and the other one. Used epoxy to attached. not sure if it will hold when used leh....

Barra, how you attached your bio ball securely????

I was thinking about doing this some time ago, but never do.. haha lazy... but was thinking combine the pump's bubbles with the venturi... would that produce more bubbles?

Was thinking if this can work better than the venturi, can use a smaller pump and have better results leh.

But have to try what barra did (the chiong needle wheel!! ke ke) and see the results. Will lets this run for a week first. Then try the other one.

Wonder if can modify an imppeller to become 12 blade or something?? but think it'll be quite hard to glue them so they dont break!! hmm.... why do china make pumps with more than 8 blades??

actually i think the weipro 2014 is a good skimmer to modify as it has a tall chamber....so u can play with different water flow and air flow rates and methods...hehehe

use superglue gel .. mine took abt 12hrs to dry completely .. once set .. it wont come off during normal operation.

I was thinking of tryin this out for experiment. Thinking of DIYing a Skimmer and now stuck with a few choices. A beckett (got a friend to buy the nozzle from the states) but ex to run the presure rated pump, an induction (aquaC chiong) and a so called needle wheel.

If this can work, will try it with a 6inch dia and 2-3ft high one. That is if this work la!

Not really .. I run my eheim externally and its used to drive my 2014 and DIY Ca reactor .. so I need the pressure and cannot allow air bubbles to go in to the Ca reactor

Any on know if the turbo skimmer from octo bay uses a modified impeller or just a standard impeller with air fed into it like what most china skimmer do??

I found this design on the web which say that the bubbles can be made finer by looping part of the pump's output back to the input. Sounds logical, will try it later.

got one website last time from HK i think...one guy drilled the top of the weipro cap and then inserted an airline into the bottom of the skimmer with a wooden airstone and the froth was very good also...hehe

but have to replace the wooden airstone as with those airstone driven skimmers..hehehe

Checked the skimmer this morning before work. Been running for bout 10hrs. Beginning to foam liaoz. The foam look different than when using the venturi. Thicker. And also took much shorter time. Normally will take 2-3days before the skimmer start foaming.

The other pump I mod for experiment. attman 3000lt/hr. will try it on the 2014 and see how's the result. have been doing some surfing and saw deltect design. They employ extra pump which recirculate the water in the skimer. Sound interesting. SHould produced much finer bubbles. Cos the bubbles are redrawn into another pump which chop it up further.
