Hi all,

2nd day of trying out SPS as such need guidance :)

1. my current tank reading is:

8.7dkh

480 cal

1430 mag

nitrate 5

no2 0

po4 0

ammonia <0.25

ph: 8.1

was reading on the other thread

Alkalinity should be high, around 12 dKH or about 4.5 meq/L

as such should i increase my dkh? and to do so, i have 2 solution which would be better?

1. redsea reef foundation B or

2. redsea coralline Gro?

b. is my placement of LPS ok? the bottom frag was originally placed on top but when i came in today morning both fell down from their placement probably due to snail knocking into them. as such i glued 1 to the rock and shifted the other to bottom of the tank

How long have you established your tank? How is the water flow and lighting? Also, you need to keep NO3 to zero as this is a must for keeping SPS. From the picture it seems your SPS is not doing so well as the color is fading and pholyps are not fully open...

not sure if i am answering your correctly:

How long have you established your tank?

1 1/2 mth.

How is the water flow and lighting?

using tunze 6015 - 1,800l/h

lighting: using http://www.aquaillumination.com/vega/specs.html at 70% blue/dark blue/royal and 58% green/white/red info i got from a fellow reefer for mix tank.

This looks like a fibre optic SPS frag. Keeping water param stable is more important. Ca looks a bit on the high side (440-450 should be good). I suggest keeping your dKh as it is for now. Also need to make sure that your SPS is placed at good water movement area but not in front of the wave maker. It also needs good lighting. Your tank looks dim. What is your tank temperature like? how do i lower CA? it is now around 460 upon my last test minutes ago.

NO3 down to 2ppm (using salifert test kit) 3rd day of frags in tank.

is the fibre optic considered doing better?

Your sps is stressed. No polyps extension at all.

Hi Nic,

Try to glue / epoxy your frags on the rocks as firm as possibly, or at least not being easily knock down by snails. Reason is simple, a stressful SPS that is being knock down the hill wont be too happy when comes to polyp extention (PE in short) :cry2: Remember that the key to a happy coral is to have as minimum stress as possible just like any other living things.

Imo, the lighting level is ok for both the pocci. However you need to ensure at least a moderate flow is given to encourage better PE.

As for your water parameter, try bring over a sample of your water over I will check for you. Alternatively you can get another brand of reliable test kit such as Salifert to double confirm the readings.

Treat others the way you wanna be treated...

speaking of flow, how much flow is enough?

do you want to see the polyps moving all the time or every couple of secs?

I have random flow in my tank, polyps moving every couple of secs. is this consider enough flow for SPS?

Polyps moving every few secs is ok.
