i wonder how many fans you use~~

and where you position your fans at....

Sorry bro missed your post.

I run 2 X fans pointed at water surface about 45degrees. It cools the water thru evap process and ventilate the hot air emitted by MH. Works pretty well for me.

Hell yeah I agree with yellow tang2. If you run a shallow tank, set up lots of T5s, you can run sps with great colour- dont belive me, look at danano's thread. Simply gorgeous.

However, if you like them Mh ripples, and your tank is pretty deep, it might be most cost effective to get a MH for its raw hard core penetration power. And if you intend to run a chiller anyway to get the 26 degrees so desired by reefers, then why not an MH?

I think there are many ways to run a reef- dsb, plenum, berlin, algae scrubber, fuge, mangrove, zeolite, massive water changes, real sea water transfusions- dang if there is only one way. I think if everyone keeps marine the same way, I'm better off playing with a virtual reef. I'm into the hobby coz it offers soemthing new and varied everyday- them hitch-hikers, those weird bulbs, etc. And I believe if it works for you, who the sh1t cares. :)

Ignore the advice if you wish. Its your tank- dont let others run it for you :)

T5 or MH, we are here to share our opinion and experience. Do not put down anyone comments. Btw, CAPS LOCK is deem to be shouting in forum.

Point to notes, MH will increase water temp generally more than T5 thus chiller is recommended. I was once considering whether to inverst in MH or T5 but in the end went to T5 because of a few reason. I think i put up my comments somewhere in another T5 thread.

Hi,

I am contemplating T5 or MH, but was told that 2x39W T5 for my 3ft will cost me $400+, and MH will be much more. When I ran a search on victron website, a complete MH set(surface mount casing) with 250W 10K BLV bulb is $195, same price for 20K bulb! <_<

I thought you can only get such pricing if you DIY.

Am I missing something here? Someone pls clarify. thanks!

If you check Ean website, ATI retrofit will cost ard $300+ with tube. Do take note that two tube of 39w is only 78w. One MH is at least 150w. Thus you will need 4 T5 tube to acheive 150w. Most people compare price with consideration on wattage.

I juz check the thread at X-Glare, a GIGA 150W TS will cost $570. I think the brand of the MH bulb does matters. (I'm not familar with MH)

Thanks JC85!

anyway, I gave a call to victron just to confirm, and true enough the price is as stated and its pretty much plug and play. the BLV bulbs are German made - which I'd assumed shoud be good.

They only have 10K 150W in stock now, cheaper some more...$150. 250W complete set will come end of month. Only thing is that they use normal ballast, need to top up for e-Ballast...

Check this - http://www.viclite.com/aqlight.htm

Do you think the quality of this make and price may be sub-standard? (At this price, no need to DIY to reduce cost.)
