types of overflow

My tank has an corner overflow box. It becomes very nosiy when the water splashing hit the water in the overflow. How is this compared to the drainpipes overflow at the back of the tank? Are they the same?

Be it corner back or side overflow, the key to a noise-less overflow is the design. Most of us use Durso pipes and tune the durso to minimize splashing.

Another bro - reefer guy uses maggie muffler - http://www.aquacave.com/Maggie-Muffler-Quiet-Overflow-Box-Standpipe-Cap-Fits-any-15-Standpipe-P2818.aspx

Hope that helps.

I have a corner overflow tank. To kill the splashing sound, what I did was to buy the thick black sponge/filter wool that are commonly sold at the lfs. Cut them to size by measuring the length of the overflow as well as the height of the overflow, where the water flow downwards. You need to measure 2 side of the overflow, where the water trickle downwards. The thick black sponge/filter wool will silence the water splashing noise. The thick black sponge/filter wool is sold as a large mat.

would the sponge choke after sometime and causes overflow?
