By placing your tank beside the window although you can enjoy natural lights for your reef, but be prepare to clean your glass more often for algae. ><

If you do not have a chiller, the water will also be warmer if it is placed beside the window if there is direct morning or afternoon sun shinning into your house.

Your lights will have to be set to the natural sunlight schedule, if you set the lights to stay on in the night, the lighting period may end up being too long and the coral may suffer.

My opinion is the margin for error is very thin. If possible, why put yourself or your tank thru this tough test... :pinch:

I have my tank beside my window and during the day, sunlight shines onto one side of it. I get algae on one side of the tank which can u will need more time to clean. Other than that I don't see much problem actually.

2 Feet Tank: (Decom Feb 2015)
-Lightings : Pharos LED light 90W with wireless controller
-Chiller : Arctica 1/10HP with H2Ocean Flow Pump 2000

-Wavemaker : Vortech MP10ES
-Skimmer : Bubble Magus NAC 3.5

-Return Pump : Eheim Compact 3000
-Reactor – TLF150 (Mod) with NP Biopellet
-Reactor – TLF150 with Rowaphos

I also have a tank by the window. Its relatively new and so I'm still fighting the beginning algae issues associated with every new tank. There is definitely more algae on the side of the tank with the sunlight. Do I think it is a big issue? Not really. The reality is that algae needs nutrients to grow. If you don't overstock, it shouldn't be a problem.

I have my tank at the balcony too. But I am lucky as it is not exposed to direct sunlight. Rather, the sun lights reflected off the windows of the opposite block onto one side of my tank. My corals that are placed there are very healthy, recieving natural sunlight. Nope, I don't have much issue with algae due to very low NO3 & PO4.

for big tanks, HDB has a rule that you must seek their approval for placing at balcony as there is less support at the balcony. I read about this from www.arofanatics.com

i heard about it before and i see some balcony without much support see liao also dont dare to put tank haha

Yeah, some of those monster fish and arowana keepers have extremely large and heavy tanks to accommodate their big fishes so must consider load if they stay in a flat.

Most of those arowana tanks can weigh more than 1 tonne...
