Planning to keep SPS dominated tank with LED with the view of electrical cost effective.

Any reefer out there have success keeping sps using LED?

HI, after using metal halides, T5 and now LEDs, my personal experience is that MH and T5 are most suited for sps tank. However, I have met reefers who are using LED lights for sps, but those who are successful at it are few. If you need LEDs, give me a call, I got many high end LEDs. John

Hi,

I myself a sps keeper using orphek nilus LED as my main light source.

My sps doing well under the light (good growth and color up), however spread of light is an issue. So I supplement it with T5.

My observation after adding T5 is that the growth still about the same but color better. Some of the color look more intense with T5.

No regret using LED though, sleak and less heat.

There are few more reefer out there successfully keeping sps using LED, netviper is one of them, you may want to find out more form him.

Have been reading all forums for information with regards to LED for SPS.

It seems like quite a number of reefer having good result with it but main issue with it is coral losing its colour but still achieving growth.

Yes, it is quite true. I had problem maintaining SPS color. Imagine pink birdnest become pale yellow birdnest. Still growing heathly thro. However, I believe that LED technology will become better & better, hopefully able to maintain SPS colors someday. Meanwhile, I juz take it as err.... a diffferent variations of birdnest loh. :P

Im one of those belivers of led. i have used both t5 and MH before and i loved them both. the initial concern i had on led was not unlike many but after giving it a try i have been stucked to it. I believe to make a decent comprism we should use a quality set of LED. One that is able to cater to the differ par/spectrum requirement of the sps.

I have been using 2 nos of Par38 in my office cube and also radion on my home tank. So far really have no complains about them. my sps are growing well. color wise it is only getting better. however, i like the "flooding" effect that t5 provides, i.e. the tank water looks like a single blue/purplish shade and it does help aesthetically to make the sps look so much better... either way, each has its own benefits and constrains and i have since chosen my own type of poison... LOL

I using led plus T5 too. Think its best supplement by T5 to bring out better coloration in sps.

I have been doing lots of reading online. Thinking of fully utilise LED only, guess just have to trail and error to get the best result.

Reason for making a change from T5 is due to the fact of replacing the tube every 6 months or so kinda troublesome to me and also the heat produce wish i don't really fancy. I have gotten myself a set of Maxspect Razor for my 2 feet tank but kinda tempted to buy a set of AI Vega as i have personally seen the light set and kinda impressed by it.

Saw the razor, nice colours no doubt! Never tried it before though... Have to get used to the colour of led vs t5... Ya I saw the AI too! very nice... But I will stick to my radion :P

Yeah gotta admit radion is really nice. Actually before looking at razor and AI i'm looking at radion and also orphek. But from some website i noticed they have mentioned about the red led in radion which somehow will encourage algae growth. Nevertheless its another quality product in market now.
