HI guys ,

i'm new to SPS and would like to know the following : ( think many SPS wanna be would love to know that too !! Judging from the poll by phang , many would love to know more before trying out , hence this few questions to start the ball rolling for the ab-initial)

1) Can we use 150W MH for SPS ?

2) Placement of SPS will be near the surface and light source , is that acceptable ?

3) does the bulb affect the colouration of the SPS ? ie (10k , 20k )

4) With most of the parameters ( calcium, dkh , nitrate , PH ) within the ideal figures , will SPS prosper under 150W MH .... ? ( does it really requires 250W or 400W )

thanks

im using 2x150w for my sps. if they r placed near the surface i dun think there will be a problem. my 150w mangage to even cause 2 of my acros to turn purplish-blue, when bght was shit brown. but i put them directly under the bulb.

im using 10k DE bulb

May I know where you get yr 150W DE 10K bulb?

I'm using a aqua connect 11K currently for my 2 ft.

New to this hobby,

Thank you

150W will keep the acros alive but if you really want dazzling colour (that's the whole point of keeping acro) than it's minimum 250W with more light the merrier. If you can get your hands on some montipora, they can colour up quite well under 150W MH.

Of course but harder to manage cause the salinity and temperature tends to fluctuate quite fast in a 2 feet tank. There are people with 2' SPS tank but problem is that it runs out of space very fast. Cheese sandwich on Reef.org has a 2' with two 250W MH and Lunchbucket has a 2' with 400W Radium.

that's y i started this thread .... does it mean SPS got to be 4/5/6 footer tanks.... and load of lights .... and lots of equipments ... the more info that we can get the better for us to switch to SPS

thanks to phang , morgan, for posting such delicious pics of SPS

btw , does 250W MH does better with 10k , 20k or radiums bulbs for SPS?

Loads of light definitely! Loads of equipment, not really but will make life easier. Evaporation will not be enough to allow sufficient kalkwasser topup to replace depleted calcium so I'll throw in a ca reactor as more or less compulsory.

hey tanzy,

just curious ... will SPS do well in a 3 ft tank with 250W radiums only ?? just a few SPS under the light source ... ?

how will acros fair under those lights ... or is it just montipora that will thrive under those lights ....( never seen monti in the "market" b4)

I won't recommend 250W Radiums alone. You won't be getting a lot of growth with the low PAR. Ushio or AB will give you more bang for the buck! 250W Radium is more for supplementary lighting or for viewing.

Ya. Ushio or AB definitely, maybe some blue PL lights if you find it is not blue enough.

A 55W per 250W MH should be fine. It's just to accent the colour of the tank. I've got 110W of actinic and I can tell the difference even with 800W of MH.

Well, unless your 250W's a Iwasaki....

took me another 800Ws of Bluelines to balance them up..... <_<

If you are refering to EYE LIghting's visit, then you have to look for Spade...

But we only saw the effect of the Iwasaki 150W 20kk..... and they come in only 150W...

If you are looking for 250Ws, your best bet are the Sakis and Radiums... for other brands.... you have to get them shipped in.......

There's a Ushio/BLV agent here in Singapore.
