Solid Feeding Schedule for our beloved fishes on coming CNY vacation

Dear Reefers here in SRC,

How did you plan for your feeding duty to your beloved fishes when you went vacation in your past?

I'm trying to make a plan for feeding routine when I left them 4 days without anybody at home on coming CNY.

I have 7 Blue Eyed Cardinals (Apogon leptacanthus), a pair of Mandarin Dragonets and one Lawnmower Blenny.

Besides of Blenny, all the fishes are used to feed with Frozen Brine Shrimps and they always refuse all other pelleted foods and flakes

That is my main concern on their diet and got headache for the best idea which i still haven't get how to manage. :paiseh:

My initial planning is that, I'll put enough density of live brine shrimps for 4 days into a Breeder/ isolated - box/net and put it together with small pump to my sump.

Then I'll manage the decent pump run time by installation the timer as a automatic feeder.

While it is feeding, it will pump the sump water to the box and rise up the water level until it is directly over flow to the sump with live BS.

According to my reading from Google, I can assume the life span of live BS in the tank water for few more days since there are no fishes to end up their life.

But I'm not sure about the diet of live BS and their waste for 4 days and also I still can't consider about the Nutritional level of that live BS from the sump for my fishes.

As long as my fishes can eat barely 40% of their diet during these 4 days, I'll be satisfy and feel happy.

The total water volume of the whole system is 40gals and it was 7 months old.

I hope Mandarin Dragonets will get barely 25% of their diet from the existing Copepods and my lovely 7 Cardinals are hopeless at that time.

Above the initial plan may have it's flaw, but nevertheless it' was preferable to use due to the lack of my own experience and knowledge. :dunno:

That's the serious reason why I'd like to request to all Bros here to get your kind instructions and advises.

Without your helps i'll never ever get solid holiday schedule.

Really, really much appreciate to you. :ThanxSmiley:

Happy Reefing,

I rather stave them for 4 days which is not a big deal if they are stable in your tank than to worry if the feeder working or what?

I often hear people saying their feeder over dose food in the tank and water quality drop. Or overfeeding the feed till the fish got sick.

Alot of ppl dont know that a hungry fish is mich healthier than a overfeed fish

Why dont you consider to use auto feeder? Its hassle free!

Hi Bro,

I'm not able to set up either DIY or High tech frozen brine shrimp Auto feeder in this moment.

And also don't have Aquarium Controller.

That's why I got headache for my finicky fishes.

If you have some good ideas to set-up DIY ATF, please kindly let me know.

Or else do you know where to buy it with reasonable price in locally?

Thank you so much.

yeah auto feeder dry pellets....4x a day- cost $25/-......you select quantity of food you want to drop.

Thanks you for giving me your advise wisely.

Unfortunately , I don't have enough time to train pellleted foods feeding to my fishes before I leave them.

That's my false, keeping that kinds of fishes without training on their diet.

Hi linko. You may want to dry the frozen shrimp and use auto feeder.

You can train them to eat dry shrimp easily.

Or just leave them for 4 days. Not big deal at all.

My point of view.

Even if you can setup dosing pump, liquid food needs to be kept cold for it to stay fresh so that is another headache...

With such short time, best is to get relative to feed on 2nd day. So the fishes will only starve for 2 days at one stretch.

Yap, I have been read so many bad stories about ATF when reefers were away from their tanks.

That's why I scared to use it too.

I agreed with your comments " a hungry fish is much healthier than a over feed one".

Another thing what we all known is that most of the fishes were delivered here by shipment.

And we can only keep alive to those fish which are healthy. I have no doubt to that healthy fish can survive without feeding during the shipment.

It is similar to my case and it makes scene.

But I'm trying to tweak the feeding with live brine shrimps when I'm away from tank and simply expect to get a good idea for continuous feeding routine.

I appreciated to your helps and comments.

Can you get anybody to feed for you? Where do you stay?

Hi Bro,

I stayed at Haig road and I'm not able to get suitable relative to take care my tank.

They are beyond the reef keeping hobby.

Thanks for your comments.

Hi bro,

I hope it so. Because they are used to feed with the brine shrimps and training with dry BS would be much easier than others within the short period.

But I really don't know how to make it dry and where to get it though.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge and hope I can get your precious comments again.

Thank you so much.

As what some have suggested, I will leave the fishes without food for 4 days. Rather than try something new and risk polluting your tank if it goes wrong.

Fishes in the wild often go without food for even weeks. I don't see any harm in 4 days.

yup no issue with not feeding for 4 days. however u may want to ensure ur water level before u leave due to evaporation.

Absolutely you are right Bro. It is another issue unless I can DIY something like the below photo which Steve Weast made for his cold water tank.

Thank you Bros Firestarter, pitto and bhtteo,

I felt more confortable now because of your encouragements.

And got more confidence to let them w/o feeding for all 4 days since I got many votes to do on it. ;)

You're welcome anytime. Just didn't want you to risk it and end up losing everything.

Another method you could try would be to purchase live pods, there are quite a few different types and sizes from Reef Nutrition and also live copepods which LFS or hobbyist sell occasionally.

Dose them into the tank regularly so that there is always live food in the tank for the fishes to pick on etc, or you could do a dosage just before u go travelling.

If you have the funds, you could instead invest in a dosing pump and hook it on to Brightwell liquid food which also come in various sizes. These are usually free floating zooplankton which are fish natural diet in the wild.

Yes, It is my first priority and I've been tried to get either RN or Algagen - Tisbe 's flying copepods.

Unfortunately Madpetz has out of stock and I don't know where to get one of those.

I'm interesting your second idea about feeding with floating zooplankton and I'll also try it soon.

Thanks you so much Bro.
