wearenotmonkey
I have brittle stars growing fast in my tank. when turn off the light, all the brittle stars will come out and almost cover my LR. is that good or bad to coral tank?
SRC Member DottyClown Posted January 9, 2013 SRC Member Share Posted January 9, 2013 Brittle stars are good scavengers. Unless its the green type, I think. If you feel you have too much in your tank, I'm sure many reefers would be glad to relieve you of some. Including me

Not sure if it will work, but you could try placing a plastic container next to the whole but lower. See if they will fall in when they come out at night. Lucinda
It is not so easy to catch a brittle star because they are so small and can easily be hide in small places. So try another tricjk like the mate tell you about placing the jar in front of the hole and turn off the light. Hope some of them will drop into the jar so thatyou can easily catch them. blusafe
Unless they're large and green, no need to worry. Those may eat fish but the rest will not harm anything in the tank. If you really want to get rid of them, need to look for underlying cause. Scavengers don't just magically spawn all over your tank unless there is mass die-off from cycling or you're just feeding too much. If you get rid of good scavengers, something else will take its place. Maybe some nice, brown diatoms covering every square inch.
SRC Member Quas111 Posted December 27, 2013 SRC Member Share Posted December 27, 2013 I had red color bristlestars on my sea fan which ate the flesh off it.
bane
I have the combined experience of both Bluesafe and Quas - green ones get big and hunt fish at night, had a red one which ate part of my leather, black ones seem pretty okay so far.
