Frogfish & Predator Tank

Good day all,

I have always been very intriqued by frogfish and other predator fishes.

In my years of reefing, I have kept various tanks and species including black tip sharks, frogfish, bamboo shark, various species of stingrays etc.

My latest tank is a Nano tank (34 lires) with the capacity to keep a maximum of 3 frogfish between 3-4 inches.

I just got the tank recently from Ah beng (Pasir Ris LFS) and the brand is Oceanfree, it comes with a tank, pump and led lightings. However, you will have to get your own fan (Dymax recommended) to keep the temperature around 27-28 degrees.

The latest addition is a 3 inch black frogfish and it is feeding on a healthy diet.

Since there's no skimmer, the plan is to change 20% water volume every twice a week.

Previously I have kept my frogfish in a 4x2x2 feet tank and they couldn't catch their prey, hence the change to a nano tank.

Can I just check with you guys. . . frogfish in general will continue eating as long as there's food or they will stop when full?

Do not overfeed frogfish....

Despite their crazy exploits eating fish larger than them in the wild. More often that not in captivity, overfed frogfish suffer from gas issues that kill them.

Additionally, damselfish that have been treated with copper will likely harm the frogfish.

Feed once or twice a week, and that should be sufficient.

I have always kept frogfish in larger aquariums, so their feeding is pretty much limited.

In this case, he fed a lot over the last 2 days and that raises some concerns.

Hey, on a side note. I'd like to know if you have any concrete information regarding their captive lifespans. It seems like that don't make it past 1-2 years. How long have yours lasted?

Hi honestly I am not very sure. But my previous frogfish have last over a year before. I guess with a proper diet and good tank perimeters, we sld be looking good.

btw anyone knows whats their diet? not all take mysis shrimps. . .

I use to have puffers... They chase my live mysis... Nibble them bit by bit from the back... Until the head . If u need mysis I sell them ;p

Tank too small for the dogface... They will take more chunky food like market prawn or frozen FW prawns..

Don't forget live mysis... I think any fish with a bigger mouth will eat that... Haha. See fisherman use prawn for fishing must have some truth

I use to have a dog face puffer..and its diet consists of shelled prawn(the reason why is because they are like hamster they need to trim down their teeth)cockles,fish fillet..pellets..well dog face might eat anyting if its hungry.
