Skimless tank with live stock and corals

My nano went skimmerless for 4 months already.

I'm using an upflow algae scrubber (UAS) as the main form of nutrient export.

I have 14 fishes (2 big, 12 small).

Some soft corals, a few lps corals, and a few sps frags..

A recent tank shot.

Thanks.. It is a 2x1.5x1.5, with a 6" ios at the back.

Water change every 2 weeks.

No carbon dosing. Dosing Red Sea reef A, B, C.

A passive bag of rowaphos for po4 control, changed every quarterly.

Livestock.

14 fishes.

2 clams.

2 shrimps.

Some tube worms

Quite a few frags of zoas.

A gsp mat.

A polyp of Florida ricordeas

A rock of golden cloves.

Some mushrooms.

A 3-head branching hammer.

2 gonioporas.

2 small alveoporas.

A small green plate.

Some small sps frags. Montipora, and the rest I don't know the names, paiseh. .

The tank is still very empty looking. Stocking up corals kinda slowly..

Hi KayKay,

nice tank there.

can you share with me your avg water parameter without Skimmer? (Esp. Ammonia) for the past 4 months?

How often do you feed your fishes and corals and did you experience a lot of algae growth on the rock or glass?

Any loss of LPS or SPS for the past 4 months?

Beside upflow algae scrubber (UAS), did you use Bio homme or live rock in the sump ?

I am also thinking of going Sumpless soon, but i think a more stable and mature tank will help alot.

Hi, it's an ios, so no sump of rocks.

No ammonia test kits. But I assume it's been zero. Nitrates are in the range of 10-20.. yes it's kinda high..

Fishes and corals are fed daily on pellets and weekly on phytoplanktons.

Brown dust of algae on tank glass cleaned every 4-5 days with nanomag cleaner. No nuisance algae on rocks whatsoever.

Yes, a bag of biohome in the ios.

12kg of rocks in display tank.

Lost a pink plate. Sps (other than the monti) not flourishing. Wonder if it's due to a combination of insufficient lighting and high nutrients?

Hi,

Don't mind asking.

Where did you add rowaphos for po4 control at?

Is it at one of the compartment since yours is an IOS?

just curious,

how to be zero? how do you reduce ammonia to zero when you have 14 fishes and feeding is daily and weekly on Phytoplantons In such a small water volume tank?

Are you changing at least 20-30 % of the tank water each week?

Ammonia is toxic to fish. If it is not zero, I would have lost all the fish right?

The ammonia from feeds, wastes, and die offs should have been broken down by the bacteria and nutrient export methods - in my case, my algae scrubber.

15-20% wc every 2-3 weeks.

I believe I can stretch the water change to even less frequently..

Yes they are toxic to living things in the tank, but fishes can tolerate to ammonia to certain levels.

What method do you use to reduce ammonia in your system?

As your UAS mainly take in nitrate and PO4.

Maybe is your regular water change that reduce ammonia. but you only do water change for 2-3 weeks and those high feeding.

How do you achieve zero for ammonia?

anyway at the risk of sounding like I'm exaggerating. My tank have been skimmerless ever since it started. 2 years old, no skimmer, no water change (at all). Keeping SPS, Soft corals, BTAs and livestocks. so far no casualties yet. using UAS..

Sounds like a good success with UAS. Care to share more on your UAS?

Hmm.. wonder how much ppm of ammonia can our noses start detecting?.. certainly a good "quick " test..
