Charging Up Gas for Chillers

Read many posts here recommending reefers to top up gas or refrigerant when chillers does not perform as good as before. This recommendation is good if there is a leak somewhere because of manufacturing defects. Most aquarium chiller like refrigerators and unlike airconditioners have compressor of hermetically sealed type, meaning they are air tight that should never have refrigerant leakage throughout its life unless there is a pipe burst or a puncture where topping up gas alone will not help to restore the efficiency. Most chiller have in-built compressor overload protection that shoudl prevent overloading. Most likely, the cause of inefficiency is due to condenser coil being clogged up with dirts over the time of operation even when one has obediently change and clean the filters according to the manufacturer's instruction. Small dirt particles passing through the filter will build up overtime without users realising that it has stucked and clogged up the condenser.

A chiller that has been in operation for more than 2 years should perform a condenser coil clean up where cleaning chemical might have to be used to losen up the dirt first, then be flushed out by strong water current. A soft brush may be used also to speed up the cleaning process. Remember, a dirty condenser may cut the chiller efficiency by as much as 60% and increase the electricity bill by about the same amount.

I am starting to write a blogger article with photos etc on how I performed this condenser cleaning operation to restore the chiller efficiency.
