LRs vs Algae Rocks

Recommended Posts

I went to a shop recently and they charged $10/kg of LR. Subsequent visits they charged $7/kg. They say the new batch are not LRs but algae rocks. (???) What is the difference? They look quite similar, except ironically the algae rock looks more expensive as it had more ‘stuff’ growing on it – seaweed look-alike, mini sponges, asst. buttons, etc.

I think the definition of algae rock is that it usually comes with a lot of macroalgae on it... usually bryopsis or some kind of fern caulerpa.

They are imported in as algae rock but the algae is usually removed... and the rock is sold as LR.

The collection of Liverock from the ocean is controlled by CITIES but algae rock is not. Go figure.

$4-$6 rocks are not good looking and the are usually heavy and always big and round ... good for base rocks only . get bit more expensive ones at $7-$10 u'll get nice pink and red coralline covered rocks ....sometimes more porous and better shape good for scaping ...
