combining tanks

Hi bros and siss, i am planning to connect a 3 x 1.5 x 2ft, 12mm thickness, braceless tank to my current 3 x 1ft sump that is serving my 4 x 2 x 2.

Firstly my concern is whether the braceless tank can support saltwater, as previously it has been use for freshwater.

And i plan to keep macro algae in this tank, will i still need to get additional skimmer for it? i am currently using a skimz sm161 for my 4ft.

My idea is to get an overflow box to connect to the sump and using an additional return pump back to the 3ft tank, will this work?

Irwana did a similar connected tank before, which maybe you can check with them . I think the photos can be found on their facebook page

bro, do you have their facebook link? too many with the name irwana in fb.

You'll also need to calculate if existing sump can accommodate back flow water volume from both display tanks during power outages.

Thanks for the highlighting this to me, didnt think of it. I think it will overflow the sump, because now when my pump is turn off, the water level to top is only about 3inch, is there any kind of formula i can use to calculate?

3 inches should give you about 15.5 L of volume.

Back flow from display tank typically stops at level of return outlet pipe.

If your outlet pipe is, say 2 inches below current water level,

then 36x18x2 = 14.6 L of back flow volume

Then, you should be ok.

Thanks for the info bro, maybe i will have the return pipe higher, like 1 inch from water surface, or drill a hole on it to have a siphon break.

Another qn, to combine tanks, do we have to cycle the new tank individually before connecting them?
