SRC Member DottyClown Posted October 9, 2012 SRC Member Share Posted October 9, 2012 Hi, I'm not sure if anybody have ever wondered or questioned....it is highly recommended to QT all new fishes before introducing them into your main display tank. This serves many purposes, with one being to prevent parasites, like ich, from being transferred into the display tank. Parasites could be carried on the fish body, but it could also be free floating in the water that the fish is shipped in. What about the NSW that we purchase from any lfs? Are the NSW treated differently from the NSW that the fishes are swimming in? If not, isn't there a possibility that parasites are also present in the NSW we are using for routine water changes? So when we do water changes, we are risking introducing parasites into the main display tank? Would appreciate if anyone with better understanding on this matter to advise, thanks. SRC Member John Deroe Kenedy Posted October 9, 2012 SRC Member Share Posted October 9, 2012 Yes it is possible NSW has parasites.. NSW, Live Sand, Live Rock.. When I first started reefing with my Nano, I use those 3 item and parasite is a non stop battle When i upgraded to 3 footer, i didnt use NSW nor Livesand and i wanted to use dead reef rock but too bad MadPetz didnt bring them in anymore. so I didnt have a choice but to cure my LR... So if it is possible that NSW used for water changes can contain parasites like ICH. Then the purpose of QT new fishes, corals, even LR, is defeated, unless one is using self-mixed salt water for water changes. Right?
SRC Member John Deroe Kenedy Posted October 9, 2012 SRC Member Share Posted October 9, 2012 Ussualy people will run QT bare btm without rocks (unless cured), the use pipings or stuff to made the hidings.. if it was me, I wont use LR.. NSW, Im really not sure... Its just possible, in my theory, if parasites like ich which cannot be seen and are free flowing, there might be ich in NSW.. 1 Quote Teh'sTankSetup Decomm on 18/8/2012 Tank: 2x1x1 Rimless Tank (Sumpless) Lighting: Aquazonic 2x24watts T5 (Actinic x Sun White) Moonlight: Acardia 1W Led Light (Blue) Filter: ISTA Max Care Cannister Skimmer: Bubble Magus E3 Chiller: Resun CL450 (Aquazonic Evo Pump) Wave: Boyu WM-25 Commissioned 20/9/2012 Tank: 3x2x2.5 Lighting: 250w DeLighting MH/ 2x 39w Delighting Diy T5 ATI Blue Plus Skimmer: H&S Skimmer Type 110-F2000 Chiller: CL450 (Aquazonic Evo Pump) Return Pump: Eheim 1260 Reactor: D&D H2Ocean FMR 75 (ADA 1500 Pump)(Rowaphos) Wavemaker: 2x SunSun Wavemaker (3000L) Incoming: Conch ll Basic ATO System/Tunze Osmolator Magic Marine 3CH Dosing Pump
