Adding salt... Help needed

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, in need of some help.

I just restarted my saltwater tank system. it's a nano tank 10g.. With live rock. Cleared all the water out and put in new substrate and changed the filter system

So today, I placed my old live rocks (previuosly used in a saltwater tank) into the tank and filled the tank with freshwater and then let the system run. I will be getting my Red Sea salt tomorrow to add to the tank.

My question is..

1) will the bacteria from my live rock die being exposed to freshwater for more than 24 hours

2) is it ok to add red sea salt to the freshwater tomorrow when I hate it? Or must I clear out all the water and start again

3) do you guys recommend purchasing saltwater from the LFS... Or purchasing using Red Sea salt?

Thx:)

Sorry haven't made question 2) clear

2) now since I have just put in freshwater today, can I add Red Sea salt tomorrow to my existing fresh water in the tank... Or must I throw away the fresh water in my tank and mix new freshwater with the salt? Thx:)

if you freshwater is tab water, the bacteria have definitely gone.

the critters in live rock (pods, worms) would have died and this will cause ammonia spike especially if the bacteria is gone.

the best is add saltwater and do cycling again or add bacteria and monitor ammonia and no2; do not add live stock yet.

agreed. Start your cycle all over again and test your water parameter to be safe

These are the steps:

(1) Remove rocks & rinse off the die-offs.

(2) Pour away the 'fresh water' from tank.

(3) Prepare salt water in a separate container, or get direct from LFS.

(4) Check water parameters before adding into tank.

(5) Put in rock.

(6) Start you cycle.
