I would propose an over flow box instead of using the siphon method.

issues would be matching the up flow rate to the down flow rate.

For me I only got a 2ft Acrylic tank which I managed to drill 3 holes and use rubber pipes to over flow to my sump tank.

But please drill when tank is dry w/o live stock.

And please use 2 to 3 mm pilot holes then extend to 5mm then 8mm, each hole shd be some distance apart. I did a 8mm hole and my 1st tank cracked on the 2nd hole drilling which was too close and too big...

If you are doing the overflow pipe system, please take note of the pipe size as it determine the maximum flow rate of the return pump u can use.

Save the trouble and get a skimz overflow box. Not that ex and least work needed to set up...:) of course i'll still go for proper drilling whenever possible...:D
