SRC Member LittleBurger Posted September 17, 2012 SRC Member Share Posted September 17, 2012 Hi all. Deciding on which to use for a 150g tank. Looking for your input in this. comparing wattage guess waterblaster wins. The most important is head loss. U can google their performance chart for better comparison. saw a water blaster pump operating out of water during last aquarama n let u touch pump to verify if hot. So in the end I choose water blaster over ehiem due to power efficiency. Quote Tank size:36"x36"x24" Return pump" 2x Reef Octo 5000 Skimmer:BK Double Cone 200 on Reef Octopus DC 5500s. moscowites
But heard from a pro reefer that the plastic in the pump will crack after 1-2 years of usage. Still thinking hard as the reef octo runs at only 60w while the Eheim 1264, 100w. Can save on a lot on bill over a long run. SRC Member james72 Posted October 9, 2012 SRC Member Share Posted October 9, 2012 For return pump use I will stick with a reliable ehiem. 1 Quote Cheers, James Reviving my reef tank : Crystal glass 53" x 22" x 17" rimless (inclusive of 12"x22"x17" IOS) Life Reef HVS3-24 with mazzei venturi ATI Sunpower 8 x 39w T5 (4 x Blue plus, 2 x Aqua blue special, Coral plus) ZET Light 3 x 3w LEDs moonlight Arctica 1/3 Hp + 1/4 Hp back up Vortech mp40w x 3 + Jebao wp25 Eheim 1264 x 3 + water blaster 5000 Vortech back up battery TLF-150 + Rowaphos Activated carbon Kamoer 3 channel + CaCl2 + NaHCo3 150L Refugium with DSB, miracle mud, cheato 2ft T5 x 2 light tubes for refugium
SRC Member brojj Posted February 13, 2013 SRC Member Share Posted February 13, 2013 Return pump is one of the most important equipment in the tank. Better to stick to 'tested' brands.
idle69
Been using eheim products since long ago, they can last easily 5 years or more..best part spares are available in most lfs! But sometime i do wonder about de diff in power, does a lower watt means lower rpm of the impeller/needle wheel? Won't that equal 2 a lower flow? SRC Member BFG Posted March 24, 2013 SRC Member Share Posted March 24, 2013 Those that are using the water blaster return pump, how do you find them now? Better to use out sump or in?
mengyang_neo
I am using both now, water blaster is good, powerful and dun take up a lot of wattage, but I am still running my eheim 1264. Eheim is the most trusted pump and most of the time nothing will happen to it. So since I have 2 return, I will run both, water blaster for the power and eheim for reliability. Yes I agreed with gary as well that ehiem is a workhorse which never fail me. Hopefully they come out some energy saving pump in future. SRC Member BFG Posted March 25, 2013 SRC Member Share Posted March 25, 2013 Reason I asked is that seeking a lower wattage pump but with a flow rate of above 3000lt/hr. Started with a 1260, upgraded to a Red Dragon but dragon don't last so went back to the 1260. Thinking of re-doing my piping under the cabinet. Gouldian
For those seeking DC or low wattage pump, there are many available now but my suggestion is to get a spare pump on stand by. Don't be like me, I lost a frag of hoeksemai after my DC pump suddenly stopped and I can't get replacement in time. SRC Supporter Harlequinmania Posted March 25, 2013 SRC Supporter Share Posted March 25, 2013 The pro about ehiem , reliability but con is power consumption is higher and give out more heat as compare to a DC pump. Which also mean adding heat into the water if you place it in-sump. So far running about 6 month now. Super silent and doesn't give out heat . Much much better than my old Red dragon.
