Hi Oceandeep, I had asked the same question 2 days back re the black growth in DSB. Tanzy responded and I qoute below :

"That's the anaerobic region of the sand bed. The black stuff is hydrogen sulphide. Just don't stir the sand and release that stuff. "

Oceandeep,

It seems you have mixed different grades of sand. The larger particles will float upwards while the smaller ones will sink downwards over time. Don't be surprised after a few years your DSB is the other way round.

That brown stuff looks like diatoms. Part of the algae cycle in the tanks.
