ralliart12
Hi fellows. I'm looking to custom-make a metal stand to suspend my light fixture from. I've more or less settled on what I'll like the outcome to resemble: Option #1: (this is still option #1; just that it's viewed from the side) Option #2: But the tricky thing is, as one of the edge of my tank is occupied by something, I cannot use conventional stands that rest on the edge. Secondly, as I'm not using a cabinet, but a steel tank stand, i.e. no "full solid back" to speak of, I will prefer if the stand can be deisgn to be free-standing from the floor directly (if I opt for Option #2, I suppose I can use some brackets, or even lots of cable ties to secure the vertical portion of the light stand to my tank's stand; but free-standing directly on the floor is still preferred ). As such, my questions are: Question #1: will aluminium rods, or stainless steel rods be more appropriate for my application? The fixture to be suspended is likely not to exceed 3kg, but I'm worried about the "snapping" of aluminium & I'm not sure if aluminium can be bent easily (I heard aluminium snap under strain instead of bending) Question #2: anybody knows any shops that can sell the material & provide the bending service? If they don't come together, any shops that provide either are welcome too. Question #3: anybody know how much such bending services cost, e.g. one right-angle bend cost how much, 2 metres of stainless steel rod cost how much, etc? Question #4: any recommendation for the diameter for such a load? & should I avoid hollow rods? Hope I can find some answers here. Thanks in advance. SRC Member reefer guy Posted September 11, 2012 SRC Member Share Posted September 11, 2012 why not mount your lights from the ceiling slab instead?
ralliart12
Hi reefer guy, I do not wish to, or know how to, make any modifications, i.e. drilling, to my ceiling.

brent
Did you ever get this figured out? I'm looking to do the same thing. Apparently, in the USA most people use 1/2" EMT electrical metal conduit. I believe that it can be bent with a hand bender as they discuss on this website Here is the one that I am trying copy. brent
Thanks both. Any ideas re the cost at DE or Madpetz?
brent
Delightings seems like a decent option. When I called Madpetz and asked a couple of questions, the lady who answered the phone told me to come down to their store and then hung up on me. SRC Member tropic Posted November 28, 2012 SRC Member Share Posted November 28, 2012 Do consider mazarra mounting bars. Nice and easily customizable to shapes and height you want.
brent
In the end I bought some mounting brackets & bars from Razali. He was very helpful and the brackets seem quite nice. Thanks everyone for your suggestions

megacue
Steel pipe and copper pipe can use a pipe bender to bent it. Think Clementi hardware might be able to do one or two bend for u, they are quite friendly. The steel type is use in electrical cable conduit. Stainless is ductile so u won't see your home water pipe If happen to be stainless steel, they won't come with bend, instead elbow is used. Unlike copper.
