280W or 650W chiller for my set-up? :)

Hi reefing shifus,

I've got a 2 by 1.5 by 1.5 set-up (30 gallons).

Currently running 2 X 24W T5 (white), planning to get another 2 blue T5 tubes, and assuming they are of the same wattage, they would mean a total of 96W in total.

For a 30 gallon setup running on 96W of T5, would a 280W chiller or a 650W chiller use lesser electricity? (after factoring in the number of kick ins for 30 gallons of water)

Specifically, im deciding between the resun CL-280 and CL-650.

Thanks all!

U need to take into consideration the heat generated by the pump and also at what temperature u 1 2 keep at

2ft cube with 2.5 sump

400w MH with 6 x 24w blue T5

Hydor wavemaker controller

Aquatronica controller

Daikin compressor with double coil

RM CR

H&S out sump skimmer

If I were you I go for CL650 due to:

  1. high rating means i will be able to use it if i intend to add more lights or upgrade my tank
  2. it takes the 650 shorter time to cool down the tank thus its does not means that the 650 will consume more electricity

If you have already made up you mind to stick with a 30g, then just go for the 280. ;)

  • 4 weeks later...
  • 1 month later...

Specs for the Resun CL-280 is at this URL: http://www.resun.com.cn/En/ProductInfo.aspx?ProID=784&ProClass=141

The recommended pump outflow is 500 to 1000 L/Hr.

To be very accurate on the power consumption the numbers of kick in and how long the kick in takes does plays a important role.

But if you are not going to upgrade your tank in the future, there is no point investing in a bigger Wattage chiller. The different will not be too much for a 30g tank.
