Is PRC a threat to global stabilty?

Seeing that the forum is so boring nowadays I was wondering what you guys think of the above. Militarily and economically.

What are the implications to our tiny island? What about ROC?

Let's keep the debate rational and free from too much emotion.

That desperate ah? :D

Personally, I feel that PRC is just a natural phase in the world progression. It is a force to be reckon with, globally everyone is scrambling in face of this change.

Europe is in chaos, as usual... US foreign policy is rather apparent but there's a fair amount of politicking behind the scene.

Singapore probably has little part except to play the cards right by aligning our interests with giants such as PRC & India, as well as the sole remaining superpower.

ROC on another hand is a different story, its existence has been orchestrated and assured to extend another purpose. Those in the know will understand what I mean.

Rumor,

Interesting, but PRC and India aren't exactly friendly to each other. How can you align yourself to 2 countries that are at the opposite end of the table?

sps_dude,

Militarily, I don't think PRC is interested in us. What I mean is it's threat to the world and the islands of ROC & Japan. How will it affect us?

Off the top of my head ... that is already passe.

We can't possibly compete in terms of labour costs, expertise maybe, but that industry is highly limited.

Tourism is also hardly a engine of growth, the asian countries are already opening up, even I will gladly forgo an expensive Europe tour for a round Asia trip.

Just trying to keep the discussion livelier :)

once they develop......singapore MNC will be in big trouble.....got to find other host country...if cant find host countries which is developing countries.. these MNC will probably go bankrupt....as u all may know MNCs are labour intensive industries....if the MNCs will move back to our country, they will collapse along with it the jobs of thousands of people ....this will mean higher unemployment rate....then ppl will resort to crime.....then......so on and so for.....this might collapse singapor.......

<------ This is Ishikawa Rika on Jan 24 2004, 10:31 PM. Cute?

I've witness the spending power of PRC 'Free people' in Hong Kong recently first hand and they can surpass the Japs. Scary. How do you make them spend in Singapore then? It is such a boring island.

We need to look from a macro point of view.

That's why I say we have to play our cards right. So far, we're doing ok. As long as there are mutual benefits, these giants are still acceptable to a certain level of cooperation, I hope.

Personally, I'm not a believer of global stability. Phillisophically, it is not necessarily a good thing.

The only constant is change, and that is how it works.

China and India's rise is, as mentioned course of progression for Asia, Europe and the US have the recognise it and tailor their attitues and foreign policies to suit that change.

It has already been reported that the spending power of Chinese from mainland China is rising fast, indicating the increasing affluence of their citizens.

Not really sure how's the marketing like, but as far as I know, its still a favoured location.

However, the arrogance of Singaporean has gotten to some of them, businessmen from both sides have much to learn from each other.

Will that mean there will be increased US military presence in Singapore?

The detachment here is only a token of US's committment to deter any hostile action to our fragile nation. But really, our greatest threat is not from the south.

Ishikawa Rika is rather cute ... do you have a montage of her as well?

Man ... just reread my previous posts, my grammar is getting from bad to worse, maybe I'll do better in my Mandarin or Hindi / Urdu :D

I don't have a montage of her yet but I can make one, maybe later.

It seems pretty clear that you guys agree that PRC is getting stronger and is a major contender in the global economy arena. Maybe I should make it more explicit.

Is the rise of PRC good or bad for us?

I dun think it makes any major difference...if it does...I just go back to the primitive stage lor...where we get to walk or cycle to our designations...sigh...how I miss Pulau Ubin during the old days... :(

It does make a difference. Singapore will not revert to kampong days if the economy is bad. It will turn into a ghetto or slum. You won't be able to cycle 10 metres without getting stabbed or mugged. It won't become good, it can only become bad.

Biblical days you have to pay unreasonable tax, be oppressed by the pharisee, the sanhedrin, the Romans, the Egyptians, etc. Not good. Definitely no reef tank.

Is the rise of PRC advantageous to Singapore?

Bascially have a bad experience with a lady 'empress dowager' from PRC so mixed reactions... :P

People relations-wise, we really have to learn as it is rather a different set of mentality and economic wise, it just means more people joining the '14 billion dollars' club than the 3 billion one if you heard that story before... :)

Just said it will make more people 'paperless' and non-concretely richer... ;)

Ok, I think if its good or bad really depends on how Singapore adapts to the change.

Align interest and actions correctly, we should reap mutual benefits. If we can bring our expertise and the relative cheap source of resources together, throw in a HUGE market, I'd say the potential is great.

Besides, we speak the language, understand the culture and I'm not talking about China alone. If we play the middleman role right, the odds are very much on our side. We're also intending to become the 'Swiss Bank' of Asia, see where I'm heading?

The commercial mindset is gradually changing. Most of the business are already aware we need to go regional at the very least. So as far as I can gather, the rise of China should do us more good than harm.
