Hi all, I have set up a new tank about a month ago. Small tank about 1.5 feet in length only. Now keeping anemones, clownfish and got a hammer coral and elegance coral. Would like to have your advise if it is advisable to install a chiller to bring down the temperature. Now currently using fan and temp is about 27.8 degrees.

Hope to have your kind advise. Thanks

Hi bro

I would strongly suggest to go for a chiller if you are a coral person, not that it is not possible to run a tank with fan and higher temperature, if i move you to Saudi arabia, you may survive the heat, you may not be comfortable, but there is a chance of you making it or not. Its an adaptation process proven to be successful for some and not for the rest. So its really a matter of doing the right thing, dont forget about light requirements as well, what we are doing is creating a means for a wild animal to live amongst us, so i would really think its wise to create that environment based on the what type of fish or coral you want to keep.

Ofcourse there is a cost in running a chilller you have to factor in, if you go for Fan you still have higher evaporation to handle as well

On a second note, My Honest opinion, it is always good to wait for a tank to mature before adding anemone, i would say 6 - 12 months, but that doesnt mean you can add anemone in any 6 month old tank.

all boils down to your husbandry and how well you understand the chemistry of your tank and how to react to any changes you see in your tank. A small tank will bring devastating consequences if not actively cared for.

With good skills and deeper understanding of your tank and its inhabitants in other words being a profesional you can add in an anemone earlier

Any recommendations for a cheap chiller?

By the way understand that chiller has different specs for different size tank. As I am considering to chane to a bigger tank in future, is it possible to buy a bigger spec chiller to use for my small tank now and no new to change chiller after tank change?

Yes bro. You definitely can go or an over-spec chiller now. You just need to ensure that an appropriately rated pump is used as the feeder for the chiller. Usually a higher spec chiller will require faster flow.

My tank is a 90L nano tank, and I'm currently using a 1/4hp chiller (Hailea 66a). Yes, I'm future-proofing for a bigger tank. Lol.

It takes only 10 mins to chiller from 28deg to 27deg. Then it rests for more than 100 mins.

I'm using a 1,700L/hr pump to keep the chiller happy.

Prior to this I'm using a 1,200L/hr pump and smaller hose fittings, the chiller kicks in for 3 mins every 20 mins. I find this too frequent and fear the chiller life may shorten due to the frequent on/off of the compressor.

HTH.
