 just came home and saw my starfish on top of my jewel coral.. I took away the starfish and to my horror  , saw part of the coral gone!! .. about 1/5 of the coral eaten .. the starfish still have some slimy stuff dangling from its mouth..

now my part of my jewel coral is 'botak'.. will it grow back? .. :(

Why do we use "My 2 cents worth" when 1 cents are not legal tender in Singapore anymore? Shouldn't it be 5 cents worth?

you must have got the choc chip star which will eat anything. The slimy stuff is the stomach of the starfish. The jewel have low chances of recovering.

no.. its the one with lots of 'thorns' on its body..

The slimy stuff is definitely the coral.. Jewel coral are like soft stuff covering a piece of rock. Part of that soft stuff seem to be ripped out of the rock.. :(

Hate to say this but I'll say it:

Do research before buying ANY livestock. Don't waste money and needless loss of lives thru educated purchasing.

There are only two reefsafe starfishes: fromia and linkia species. Any others... pls avoid unless you have a FOWLR tank... but even then... they may end up eating your fishes or be eaten themselves.

no.. definitely not it...

those 'thorns' are not really thorns..

I've seen so many LFS selling it and putting it in their reef and fish tank.. anyway I've relocated my coral to a higher location... the starfish do not usually climb that high..

mine has only one jewel coral and blue sponges.. you can say its a FOWLR tank... this starfish doesn't attack any LSs... even my shrimp likes to hide under it sometimes...

anyway like I said, I've relocated the coral...

Is it pink in colour and had about 12arms? I've got it in my sump, isoslated away from any LS. It eats anything and everything in it's path. It came with my LR.

12 arms?! .. I know some kinds which attacks anything... its those thin arms kinds with 'hair' all over the arms.. saw at one FS. attacked all the other starfishes.. :erm:

Sounds like a green brittlestar... but they are considered fish eaters more than anything else.

You have to describe it better next time!

It's more knobbly than thorny. ;)

Looks similar to a chocolate chip starfish.

hehe ...so is it harmful to my other LS?

Dont think the coral can recover so fast. LPS almost never recovers from such attacks or it will take a very long time to do so.

The slimy stuff is the starfish stomach, it will extrude the stomach and the enzyme will breakdown the coral tissue on the spot just like how a spider feed.

So you are saying that i was in time to save the coral from melting from the starfish's enzymes?,, ;) ... but that part cannot open fully already.. :( .. maybe wait few days see how.. hope it recovers..
