Review of the 1.25hp Titanium chiller

Chiller = 1.25hp Titanium Chiller

Pump used = Ehiem 1260 return back to main tank.

My tank runs the lights (2x36PL)in the refugium from 8pm to 12 noon and main lights (2x250W) comes on at 12noon to 10pm.

Other heat source includes 1xocean free 9000 pump immersed (80W) driving my EV-240.

1xAT-106 immsersed (85W) return pump.

1x1260 external 65W driving the chiller.

2x15w tunze 6010 stream.

Recording is one frame every min.

With 2x36W PL ON only.

2:25 26.5 degs compressor on

Time taken to cool 1.6degs = 4hrs 36mins

Time taken to rise 1.6degs = 2hrs 28mins

Total run time of chiller/day = 2 hrs 28 min

+ 2 hrs 24min

+ 4 hrs 36mins

= 9.5 hrs (approx 10hrs)

The chiller is placed besides the main tank and this could have caused it to draw in hot air hence reducing the efficiency. Will be shifting it further away where the ventilation is better and that should help to improve on the performance. The tubings will need to be insulated and that should help too.

Next review will be after the above point is done and the pump changed to the MD55.

1. :o Wow...1.25HP Titanium Chiller (with PL/ MH combined- set at 25C) runs approx 40% of the time. If someone uses 100% MH, the electrical bill may be scary. Need to have deep pockets man.... :P

Question 1.1 : What is the ambient temp in your room? Especially around 1~2meters away from TC heat exhaust ? Does it also increases by an average of 3~4 deg.C ?

Question 1.2 : If you increases your set temp from 25C to 25.5C or 26.0C, how much chiller running time will it be reduced ?

2. :blink: Can anyone advise on their chiller running time with a 0.5HP Chiller (with PL/ MH combined - set at 25C, 25.5C or 26C) ?

Thanks for your input...as I am also looking to upgrade my current chiller to run my 4 ft tank.

temp 1-2 meters from the chiller is abt 30-31 degs.

The exhaust points into the kitchen.

I will shift the chiller into the kitchen when I redo the piping then I will redo the test again.

Another point is I need to check the temp in the main tank too and this should give a more accurate picture.

If performance very poor then have to look for Dr Chill already :P

hmm wonder what about the reef relief chiller will be..

perform same as the T chiller...

also how far u can place your chiller away from your main tank?

also where is the water flow to the chiller and from the chiller to where

also how far away from water you place your MH. 6" away from water or 8"...????

lastly is the room enclose or airly as some ppls place their tank in their bed room and close their windows most of the time.

place in kitchen u not scare of the oily envirnoment...??? also i thought kitchen is the warmest place in the house due to cooking..

chiller is 0.5 meter away besides the main tank.

The chiller output is returned back to the main tank. That is why it takes a longer time initally for the temp to start to drop.

MH is 4" from the water surface.

The air circulation is not so good so that is why I need to shift the chiller to the kitchen where there is good air circulation then we hopefully can see an improvement in the performance.

wow 4" from the water surface.. so near.. try bring it up to 6"

lastly dont you find it, if you move the chiller too far away then the longer time the water need to travel and through the travelling in the pipe alot of coolest is lose and gatta warm up by the envirnoment before it reach the tank...

I think to improve the performance.. all pipes should be insulated with the type of foam that is used for aircon pipings... then environmental heat will not be absorbed by the cool water.. but i think this sortof thing is negligible as the majority of the heat increase will be from the MHs/pumps thus the chiller will have to work hard to bring down the temp..

Another thing I going to do is to move all the pumps external.

Anyway when the MD55 comes it will replace 2 pumps so that will be min heat introduced from the pumps.

Those insulation material can use armaflex, insuflex etc, looks the same to me.

Actually for my car aircon I did the same thing and the improvement is quite significant but that could be due to the very much higher temp of the engine bay and the cold pipe being aluminium. For us the tubing are plastic so it is not as bad.

Guess I'll check with Dr chill regarding the performance.

wah kaoz..your 4 ft tank + sump need so long to drop 1.6deg?? you better check around if this is normal, it could be due to improper ventilation or something!! from my own exp with my diy chiller, my 1HP needs 1hr to drop 1.2 deg with 1600l of water which includes a 300l volume sump outdoor expose to heat!! currently using 300w mh...but hot or cold weather, doesn't really affect the pull down time..probably the slowest time taken versus the fastest time taken is less than 15min difference..

Tested today. Very cooling day today

11:47 26.5 degs compressor on

15:37 25.0 degs compressor off

Time taken 3hrs 50mins.

This compared to 4hrs 36mins yesterday quite a big difference.

Anyone else using 1.25hp Titanium Chiller can do some performance check then at least I know if mine is normal.

I just want to make sure I didn't get a defective product. Ventilation might be not great at where I place the chiller but I don't feel like in a oven when I stand besides the chiller.

Wait for you when you're free then you help to check the performance heheh.
