I just started the FR running not long, about two weeks already. The water initially is crystal clear, then two days in the FR operation, the water turns mliky and smells. I had to get the entire tank water to be changed, and it is running fine till today. The water is still crystal clear, but I see red slime alage starts to grow.

I am using NP biopellet. The trick is to increase the amout of media slowly to reach the recommended amout of media. The water will turn milky a few days due to sudden increase bacteria, it will reach a equilibrim stage and all will be fine. The diatom in my tank reduce significantly after the introductio of bio pellet.

I am cycling my tank with it so can't comment the effectiveless of it removing nitrate for now. What I understand is NP was the one that first came out with Biopellet

2 Feet Tank: (Decom Feb 2015)
-Lightings : Pharos LED light 90W with wireless controller
-Chiller : Arctica 1/10HP with H2Ocean Flow Pump 2000

-Wavemaker : Vortech MP10ES
-Skimmer : Bubble Magus NAC 3.5

-Return Pump : Eheim Compact 3000
-Reactor – TLF150 (Mod) with NP Biopellet
-Reactor – TLF150 with Rowaphos

Biopellet is a carbon source. If you do not have enough nitrifying bacteria to utilize this source of carbon, cyanobacteria will absorb the excess carbon for growth. That is why there are bacteria products that accompany biopellets (Eg. Bactiv8 with NPX Biopellet).

Always something more important than fish.
