I think people like me will be too lazy to check on the net... SRC Member SharkBait Posted January 23, 2004 SRC Member Share Posted January 23, 2004 chaetomorpha are very hard to find locally it seems. Most probably the ones we see are byropsis?
FuEl
Maybe he wants to tie them onto liverock and do some underwater gardening...reminds me of the freshwater riccia fluitans. SRC Member Wei Posted January 23, 2004 Author SRC Member Share Posted January 23, 2004 i want to add it to my seahorse tank. Act as additional filtration & block some light direct to my seahorses. Chek Jawa has them, but i dun really want to disturb it. Wei
FuEl
I don't see anything wrong with plucking off a handful of nuisance algae. Just make sure you don't damage anything else while getting to them... SRC Member Wei Posted January 23, 2004 Author SRC Member Share Posted January 23, 2004 I prefer either purchasing them or somebody gave it to me.
SRC Member SpiderOne Posted January 23, 2004 SRC Member Share Posted January 23, 2004 nuisance??? this is one of the most sought after macroalgae. i know a few reefers here who have them but if they havnt already approached you.. then i think it is not my place to list out any names . people do have it. so dun worry.continue searching and good luck

Besides volunteering to cull hamsters, misidentifying macroalgae and merulina, what else do you do?
SRC Member ryan Posted January 24, 2004 SRC Member Share Posted January 24, 2004 hey i found a HUGE clump along east coast beach at low tide while training(i'm a sailor). it was washed up to the beach. maybe you can try looking along our local beaches. i would pass you some, however mine started melting so i gave it all to a fellow reefer. if i find some more i will pass it to you. KingFish
Just so you know, for those who have not seen Chaeto, it is a fine line between that and Hair algae, even Bryopsis in the early stages may look like Chaeto.
SRC Member hoppinghippos Posted January 25, 2004 SRC Member Share Posted January 25, 2004 Rumour, so any way of differentiating it from hair algae then?
KingFish
Chaeto are typically deep green in colour, wiry and taut to touch, somewhat like a Brillo pad. Hair algae are long and stringy, slimy to touch. You'll know you do not want it in your tank. Bryopsis in its early stages are pale yellowish green in colour and is tough to remove.
