2x1x1.5 Tank Setup Help

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Intend to start a 2x1x1.5 tank soon and have the following questions on equipment:

1. Wavemaker - What exactly does a normal wavemaker do? If I get a Tunze 6015, is it the same as a normal powerhead pumping water at one direction?

2. Chiller - I am currently using Hailea HS-28A for freshwater. Which chiller has the lowest noise, Artica or Teco?

3. FR - Is TLF Phosban FR the smallest? I may not have space for that in my sump. Intend to run biopellet

4. Overflow - Will be using internal overflow. Will the water in the overflow plus sump activity be noisy? Currently using canister for freshwater, no noise

5. Refugium - Any suggestion what to use in here? I have chaeto that I can think of.

6. Lightings - Aiming at the new Maxspect Razor, hope this is ok

7. Return pump - Intend to use a 3000L/H pump for everything in series -> pump, chiller, FR, tank ...

8. Skimmer - Maybe enough space for a BM NAC 3.5 only, is this good? Any other recommendation?

Thanks to all

2 Feet Tank: (Decom Feb 2015)
-Lightings : Pharos LED light 90W with wireless controller
-Chiller : Arctica 1/10HP with H2Ocean Flow Pump 2000

-Wavemaker : Vortech MP10ES
-Skimmer : Bubble Magus NAC 3.5

-Return Pump : Eheim Compact 3000
-Reactor – TLF150 (Mod) with NP Biopellet
-Reactor – TLF150 with Rowaphos

Hi bro,

IMHO, a powerhead have a narrower stream of water jet as compare to a wavemaker.

For more details here is the website for the Tunze. http://www.tunze.com/index.php?id=202&L=1&C=SG

For the rest of the question, got to wait for the more experiance bros/ sis here.

Thanks bro, can't get the TLF dimensions yet. Is the FMR75 smaller in size?

Thanks for the link bro. I was looking at 6015 but website recommended 6025. Hmm I need to do more homework

For a single return pump linked in series to chiller, FR, and back to tank is not an ideal setup.

Each piece of equipment will require a specific flow rate to optimise their performance.

If you're dead set on a single pump, do T-off for the equipment in the line, each with valve control for easy detachment or for maintenance.

Anyway for your tank volume of 80L, the actual flow rate (reduced) after the T-offs would be sufficient for more than 10x turnover.

Item 2, 3, 5, 7, 8 will take up space in your overflow compartments. IMO, A 2x1x1.5 does not allow for much space for them. Do consider using a separate sump tank.

Yes bro, I am planning for a sump at the bottom but it has a small area only therefore will be using smallest equip possible

Hi bro, I tot of this concern before and is already planning ball valves for each area and I am targeting a 20x turnover.

Pardon me, how u get 80L? I can only calculate 70L, did you include the sump? Need to know in case I miscalculate anything. :)

I took the max possible volume. 60x30x45cm. I didn't factor in the "unused" height at the top of the tank.

20x turnover would be 1,400L/hr.

After T-ing off to the FR & chiller, assuming 400L to FR, and 1,000L to chiller, still will have 1,600L left.

Thanks bro, I learnt something new today :)

In terms of maintenance, there is easy snap off valves like you mentioned in the market right? Want to have the flexibility to remove item for cleaning or change in future.
