My chiller is installed across my room next to the window. I use an Eheim pump on a closed loop to my main tank.

So its.... Main Tank > Pump > Chiller > Main Tank.

I run it direct so that if anything happens to my main circulation pump or I have to take my sump offline... my tank still remains chilled.

Yeah... it will.... there would be some loss of cooling due to the distance... but anyway rubber hoses will insulate to some extent.

But having my chiller next to my window means a lot of heat is vented out of my room plus my chiller will be more efficient because it doesn't recycle hot air... when I have it under my tank... worse still if it has to be enclosed in a cabinet even with ventilation slits.

The use of insulation foam hose will help (is that the right term to describe those black rubber/styrofoam hose that wraps around rubber hoses?)

mine will be just beside the tank... but will have a slight difference from AT's..

tank > sump > chiller > tank.....

Used to do this for my old tank.

But I made my design such for safety ie. what if your sump cracks.... and you have to take your chiller offline while repairs are made? Your tank will overheat!

other than accidents, any other bad points :erm:

sorry... i'm a little confused here....

so its main tank to pump... then pump to chiller...

how come you need a pump to pump water to chiller?

the reason being is simple.

pump for main tank for circulation needs to be 3-5times the volume of ur tank.eg 300L x 5=1500L p/hr of water needed to circulate water.

but pump 4 chiller needs to meet the required chiller water flow.most chillers about 0.5hp needs about less than 1500L p/hr.so u wat u'll get?too high water flow which result 1)poor chiller effieciency,2)u'll spoilt the chiller internal parts 3)ur chiller will slowly leak

so having an overpowered pump for chiller is no good...believe me..

 You can't expect gravity to delivery water to your chiller and then back to your tank again!

Of course you need a pump!

My chiller is across my room too... a pump is definitely needed to move water.
