Hi guys,

Is it me or do I seldom see Moorish Idols in reef tanks? Are they really difficult to rear? They are tangs so they don't nip or eat corals, am I right? Do they not get along well with other fishes?

Per say, they are really one of the most beautiful fishes going around as the shape of their body is really unique..

MI are easy if you managed to get a already feeding specimen.

MI are not tangs, they are the one and only species of the genus Zanclus (Zanclus Cornutus) they will initially classified under Chaetodon (Butterfly) but was later re-classified by Linneaus 1758.

Unlike tangs, they are do not have the bony blades near the end of their tails.

MI are omnivores and been known to consume large quantity of sponges.

From my personal experience having kept 1 for 2.5 years, they are very territorial once established and will attacked any new laterally compressed fish regardless of species.

A majestic fish will long dorsal.

This species should be tried by experienced hobbyist with larger tanks only. hard to get a feeding specimen and will hardly start feeding if bought as non-feeding. Beware.

Since it arrival, i tend to overfeed the fishes cos it quite skinny till can see the bone. Hope for the best.

Had ML years ago got it to feed on pellets and its eating well but however one day after a few month it died on me. Maybe the pellets last time not nutritional enough lol.
