DIY Project UAS - update 14.07.12

It's been 7 days since I ran the DIY LEDs (4red + 1blue) on the ATS.

Results are more than satisfactory.

Recap of the LEDs.

Livestock update 15.07.12

post-3628-13423370551941_thumb.jpg

Please don't flame me.

The YT Has always been a "must-have" for me.

I already chose the smallest healthy specimen I can find.

I'm probably adding a PT next week, if there are smaller specimens in the shipment.

I pledge that I will stop adding tangs after the PT. Promise.

Also added a small pair of locally bred true percs yesterday morning. Real small fishes. Both about 1" length each.

But they're less black than the true percs I've seen. Will more black show when they mature?

A day of a few "first" -17.07.2012

1. After weeks of trying to growing coralline algae, finally I see the first purple dots! Haha, I know it's just a very small achievement, but I'm still excited!

Unfortunately, these purple dots are on the Tunze wave maker!

post-3628-13425387106822_thumb.jpg

2. Tube worm offspring!

Saw Henry's tank at ML (the one w the slanted front glass) and the forest of tube worms. My jaw dropped when I first saw it. He said to just plant some tube worms halfway into the sandbed and the worms will take care of the propagation.

He's right!!

post-3628-13425389805653_thumb.jpg

Hope this is the first of many offsprings.

3. First sight of unknown snails.

Is this pest or friend? Only 3-5mm big.

post-3628-13425391309623_thumb.jpg

4. Easily removed an aiptasia anemone for the first time.

It was growing on the sand. I just scooped it up with a tau huay spoon.

Easy peasy. Initially I was thinking about peppermint shrimp and berghias. Lol.

Can you spot the aip?

Lol touch wood..

Lucky this fella was on the sandbed, at a corner I can reach easily..

When I see a bunch of them, I'll leave them to the experts.. the peppermint shrimps!!

Maybe I should introduce a peppermint or 2 now, to whack the baby aips if there were any..

Hmmm, if got no more aips, what do peppermints eat?

Hi bro,

How to cultivate the grow of coralline algae inside the tank,

any additive you dosed..

Hi bro,

My dosing is very primitive one. Based on my 90L total water volume.

1. Quarter teaspoon of Brightwell "Elemental" powder mixed in my ATO DI water, dripped at 1.5L per day.

2. 2.5ml of Brightwell "Magnesion" every alternate day.

3. 2.5ml each of both Brightwell "Reef Code A" & "Reef Code B" every alternate day.

Note: I'm dosing at roughly half the recommended rates for the volume.

Dosing the above amounts until I get my hands on D-D multi test kits for Mg, Ca, & dkh.

After which will be fine tuning based on the exact deficiencies.

4. 7.5 hours of blue LED lights per day.

pH has been maintained at 8.1 - 8.2 all the while, monitored by "Snail" pH meter.

DIY Project UAS - Update 22.07.12

Another week since I last washed the turf.

7 days' of nutrients concised on this 20 sq inches of turf.

I can say I'm happy with this dark mass, but I wish the growth be thicker.

DIY Project 6 - Carpentry

Will be getting my chiller in a few days.

The most logical placement is the left side of the tank. Unfortunately, this is also the side where I'll have to access the ATS weekly.

I needed a cabinet that is:

1. Wide enough to place the chiller (47cm) on top.

2. Strong enough for me to step on it every week.

3. Ergonomic enough. Not too tall, but just tall enough to store 1.5L bottles vertically within the cabinet.

4. Long enough to hold both the chiller and for me to step up beside the chiller and yet not knock it over.

The cabinets available in the market do not meet all my criteria above.

Custom making it costs way too high to justify for a cabinet that doesn't need to hold a glass tank.

So I had to DIY again.

Unfortunately I didn't take photos of the raw material stage, nor of the production stages. Only at the end then I remembered to take photos. Perhaps it's the dust, or maybe it's the physical work. Terrible backache at the end of this 4-hour project.

Finished article.

I like the shot on the red firefish

Thanks bro. That's so far the only decent shot I have (using DSLR). It's also perhaps the only fish that stay still enough. Lol.

Many of the other pic are on iphone cam.

Ya it's a beautiful fish.

I had actually planned my nano for this fish, but unfortunately the timings just not right. And I was impatient to see the tank empty for weeks while waiting for such a shipment.

Go for it bro. There's more at LCK now.

In remembrance of those that got away. R.I.P.

Purple Firefish. With me for 8 days.

Longnose Hawkfish. With me for 20 hours. was in this position within the first hour of introduction. Think it was an unhealthy specimen I unknowingly chose.
