should wave maker pointing upward or downward

Hi guys, may I know which direction should I point my wave maker at? Point upward at water surface or downward at sand bed? Also wave maker should position at what location? Bottom, mid or top of tank?

1 or 2 "big"(eg mp40) to create general flow

1 or 2 "small"(eg t6045) to target blind spot

Today's wavemakers are quite sophisticated and come with different wave modes. The bottom line is a design which pull currents from the bottom of the tank and send them rolling forwards viz. Sun Sun, Resun and Seio models.

Hence if you are using the abovementioned types, the water circulation is already giving you some good results. But of course, with the more expensive types like Tunze, Vortech or the Conch, the placement is more a case of ease of removal for cleaning. The latter types offer different types of surge.

Just to share my experience. Pointing downwards cause the fine sand particles to float up and circulate around the tank, so I am keeping it horizontal or slightly upwards.

To add-on, it also depends how deep put your WM... some corals love the wave.
