My 2ft Nano Reef Tank

I didn't read the whole thread, so pardon me if I do make any mistakes...

This is a beautiful tank, especially for a nano, but I feel it is overstocked and the selection of fishes may not be suitable.

I am somewhat certain that a 20 gallon tank is expected to only hold up to 3-4 fishes, plus some invertebrates. Am I right about this?

Nudibranches, or what you call, slugs, should not be purchased. As high specialised feeders, they do not feed well, and end up dying eventually. This presents some measure of threat to their wild populations.

Seahorses will have some difficulty having access to sufficient pods and food. They have a short digestive tract and need constant feeding. Have you been able to supply them with an ample diet?

The yellow and hippo tang will split the tank open as they grow older. This is bad idea unless you have a larger tank to support it.

However, if this tank does work more or less well, I am keen to make one on the same basis. It is a truly attractive proposition.

Thanks for the comments. Very insightful.

You pointed out correctly that nudibranches and seahorses are demanding to keep, which is why I have also stopped purchasing them after realising its unsuitability.

The problem of incompatibility is more important than overstocking. My livestocks are selected carefully based on their temperament. This will help prevent fights and territorial disputes. And mine is a 10gal tank, not 20. With weekly water changes, you can certainly hold more than 4 fishes.

Thank you Bro Raymond.

I have decom the ISTA canister and opted for a bigger eheim canister. Not so big that it can't fit on my table-top. Yes, everything is on my table-top, nothing on the floor. I'm using dual filtration as my protein skimmer by RIO also comes with a filter.

I don't clean my canister so regularly, probably once a month if I remember! More importantly, make sure you do 20-25% water change weekly. As for flow rate, since there is a wavemaker, I don't think it matters much.

Care to share the eheim canister that you uses now?

I am looking at Ecco that has a low power consumption but at a higher price.

Is the rio protein skimmer a HOB?

I'm using the eHeim AquaCompact 60. Paid about a hundred plus for this. No regrets as i could stuff more bio media into the canister.

Yes, the RIO is a HOB, a god-sent as I do not want to waste any space in my tank.

Slapper, your tank really blew me away! Are you sure its a 2ft? Looks more than a 2ft in the pics... anyway what is the width and height of the tank?

Seeing your tank really make me feel that I want to start reefing again!

Great video bro slapper!

Still running you 2ft with canister?

THank you!

Yes, still running it with my faithful canister. :) My fishes and corals are pretty much stabilised, but i'm still having problems keeping anthias. I think they are more demanding fishes.

Surprisingly, the 2ft is able to house quite a number of fishes. I've got quite a few hidden most of the time, e.g. the gobies. I'm just a little concerned that my Yellow Tang and Blue Tang may burst the tank soon. They are growing too fast!

Very colourful tank filled with corals ! Time to change bigger tank ? Haha

It has always been a dilemma. I like my tank on my table, and you can't do that with a big tank. Yet you can have more LS in a big tank, but maintenance wise would be more ex too.

Bro Slapper, Cycling a Fluval Chi 6.6gl now, but the filtration was pathetic.

Got myself a Rio last night. Can you share what you put in the compartments of the Rio?

There is only a white filter membrane, I have got polyfilters, Biohome subtrates, and the noramal wool filters,

can advise me which to put and in which compartment?
