Proper way to plant algae in ref??

My previous 2 attempts at letting algae grow in my refugium had failed as placed them in the refugium w/o sand. I met an uncle at a lfs and he advise me to pluck the algae out from the rock and plant it into sand. That should be the right thing to do right??..Just wanna confirm

Huh??? I just dump the algae rock in the fuge and let it grow out by itself...

Really ah. Hmm, dunno leh. The last time i tried this the whole thing became very smelly, rotten smell. I was wondering could it be because of die-off from the rock but the attached rock then was only a small palm size.

Yeap, there is an 11w PL light shining over it. My ref is only 1ft nia.

Mine around the same but I blast 36W PL...

I just throw the algae rock into my 1ft refugium without sand inside using 2x9w pl on for 12 hr a day & they growing very well.

Hmmm , then i wonder what was wrong with my previous ones. All stinkslike shit after 1-2 weeks in the refugium, like when u cycle rock like that. Anyway, i got my diy sump/refugium from danano. Pretty small so i think my lights "may" be sufficient. Anybody can give me some advise??...I have attached a pic of it. This pic was taken from danano's sale thread. It's the blue tub behind
