Bio Pellets Reactor or Denitrator or BOTH

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

There seems to be alot debate and opinions regarding these 2 in other forums as well and just wondering what is opinion from reefers here.

How many of you are using either one of those. Or is anyone of you using both?

Appreciate your inputs. Many thanks!

Use to use denitrator running sulpur. Effective but output always choke.

Am using Bio Pellets now.

  • 7 months later...

i had been using biopellets, then switch to vodka.

now running biopellets with vodka.

i realize with biopellets alone cannot bring the negative parameters very very low. (for a lazy method)

with vodka, those parameters can be kept very very low. (daily dosing)

now running both, but reduced vodka dosage. results is similar to dosing vodka alone.

im just trying.

Dosing Microbacter 7 and Bio Reef Fuel but had a bout of cyano outbreak. Any advice? Heard Bio Reef Fuel adds to the cyano so I stopped. Only dosing Microbacter 7 now.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I do have the similar question in mind - NP biopellet cause bacteria bloom, hence the output should target at the skimmer to remove excess bacteria. if an amount of bacteria enters the tank can be food for coral and filter feeders, however if too much excess in tank can cause cyano problem I heard...

this concept always puzzle me - NP biopellet is supposed to keep nitrate and po4 low (which in turns help to reduce algae issue) but if not manage correctly, can cause algae + cyano issue? odd odd... can someone enlighten please?

Regards,
Jeff

What one needs to keep in mind, biological carbon-driven filtration is nitrification, that is the aerobic conversion of ammonias to nitrates via bacteria, while denitrification is the anaerobic process of further breaking down these products to nitrogen gas via bacteria. Thus a pellet filter is for ntrification and a sulphur filter is for denitrification. One may use both, but is it required. No!

An excellent skimmer will harvest the growing population of nitrifiing bacteria (nitrosomonas/nitrobacter) and thus remove the nitrates at an earlier stage. They will not have a chance to be denitrifiied.

Systems not using a skimmer must have some form of denitrification and, as this chain of events is not as easy to keep stabile, the method with the skimmer and pellets is preferred by most.
