In real life, Sun is out for 12 hours in varying intensity, so IMO you could on your MH for 10 hours. and on your supplement light like PL actinic etc one hour before you on your MH till one hour after you off your MH. that would simulate dusk and dawn?? Just my 2 cents

well if u want to talk about simulate. I have once read a gd book/web about this guy who talk about lighting... think post by AT.. forget already...

it mention, in nature light is stronger during the afternoon which is around 11AM to 2-3PM.

Let say on a 12 hr...

Thus it will be best on your "blue" light 1 hr first e.g. 7AM.. then on your PL/t5 on the 2nd hour for 3 hrs.. e.g. 8AM to 11AM.. then off your PL/T5 and

on your MH from 11AM to 3PM then off your Mh and on T5 from 3PM to 6PM and then off it and on your "blue" light from 6PM to 7PM...

This is the best...

so far I dont think anyone here in SG do that...

of course not lah. SO troublesome. Either need someone to be constantly at home during those hours or have to set many timers. hahaha. My way is just a very simple way what not very effective in simulating but, what gives?

Recommended photoperiod for MH is between 8-10hrs. 4 hrs is really too little for the zooxanthellae to generate enough food through photosynthesis for the corals to survive which is the natural process in which many corals use to survive in the wild. Even with supplementary feeding, the bulk of the food needed comes from photosynthesis.

As MH will never be as intense or strong as the sun, therefore it is better to run a longer photoperiod even if it seems unnatural to have the "sun" up for 8-10hrs a day. This is assuming that water quality is good and nutrients are controlled to prevent nuisance algae from growing.

Please correct me if I am wrong :D
