Mixing seawater at room temperature

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I am new to the hobby and I have started making my first batch of sea water using tropic marin salt.

I bought a cheap hydrometer ($6) china brand that measures sg and salinity at 25oC

However the distilled water I use is at room temperature (29 degrees).

I read up and they said that specific gravity(sg) changes with different temperature. My question is if I mix the water at 290 C and the hydrometer measures sg at 250C. What sg level should I aim for if I am mixing the water at room temperature assuming I want actual sg of 1.024 at 29oC? (I am still in the process of cycling so I am not maintaining the temperature.

Now my tank reads 1.019 sg at 290C using the hydrometer at 250C.
