Green algae turns white

Hi Bro,

Need some urgent advice here!

I have been experiencing problem with Cyanobacteria (red slime algae) in my tank for months. I believe it may be due to my mother feeding too much when I am out of house - so maybe too much nutrient in the water.

Today I went to purchase a few rocks of green algae - thinking that they can asborb the nutrient so as to kill off the Cyanobacteria.

It has only been one night and the green algae are all turning white!

Can I know the cause of it? Is it because the green algae has absorbed all the nutrient, etc?

I read from some other forums that green algae can go 'sexual' which may cause it to turn white? Is it possible in my tank since they are only here for 1 day!

Oh, not sure if this is relevant but the algae remain green the entire daytime when my light is on. I turned off the light at around 9pm plus and at 2am I happened to go and take a look and got a shock that they all turned white.

Have you measure your PO4?

Maintenace this as close to zero as possible.

Use a reliable test set for measurement.

If higher then 0.05 ppm please run FR with phos remover like

Thanks bro. A really really strange thing happened this morning. After I woke up and went to check my tank - all the green algae turned back to green again!

This is really puzzling because I never know that algae will turn color at night and turn green again in the morning.

I swear! They were white last night 2am when I saw them :blush:

Yes, green marine plants do turned white when lights are off. But if it remained white for too long, it means it's not healthy and could be dying off slowly. Lack of food and lights are mostly the reasons.

I believe you are talking about caulerpa sp which is the most common algae that you can find in LFS..

They will turn asexual in unacceptable conditions and it might crash your tank if large amount turn asexual and your tank will turn cloudy.. Asexual = Turning White..

If you really wanna keep them, keep them in a 24/7 refugium...

If you really want to use for nutrient export, go for chaeto but only large amount will work..

As for Cyanobacteria, there is several causes, low flow in the area, high amount of DOC and high phosphate... Pin point the problem will help you solve it easier...

It might be becos it is LED... There were no problem with reefers using T5 and PL...

i use LED for my chaeto..no problem oso...1 possible reason is there might not be enugh nutrients in ur water for dem to grow...mine is growing like crazy in my refugium...used to on 24/7, bt now reduce to 18 hrs to let my LED to take a break, no problem oso...my 2 cents

There's some green hairy algae starting to growing bits and pieces here & there so dun think my nutrients is insufficient. But i never really test it cos ran out of test kit. My Beamsworks Power LED200 has 33 leds which i think is abt 1watt per LED so added up to 33 watts. Think should be good enough?

Bro beamworks200 has 33x0.06w. So in total is abt 2w only. I'm using beamworks 400, thinking to change to the 1w per LED version.

I left my tank untouched for 9 days, the tank bottom and glass surface all grew with green hair algae, at night, they look green under light and white under no light. I ran rowapho for 2 days, they died half already... now almost nothing. My snail would starve.
