RTN King

Recommended Posts

For those of you who were SPS reefers in the mid 00s, there was talk about a particular species of SPS coral (from Fiji) that always succumbed to RTN in any tank. Hence, it's nickname of "RTN King"!

Here's a photo of it in one of the reefer's (scarab) old tank (see below) - it's the whitish one behind the purple valida. Anyone knows what species it is?

Lol...STN King ?! Very funny yet such appropriate description for this SPS.

I have several encounter with this specimen from Figi waltsmith shippment...and yes most of the time it will STN or even SRTN

From the coral structure it looks like acropora Macrostoma sp.

What do you think ?

A. macrostoma? I see it being sold in liveaquaria.com as part of their aussie sps shipment at times.

Are they somewhat like gemmiferas and monticulosas which demand super high water turbulence and lighting?

That's why i suspect its possibly A. macrostoma or related genies. It's not unusual to find A. Macrostoma in Aussies shippment. High flow is a given for this species, lighting wise i have yet to find out, but you may be surprise that they are not as high light demanding.

If i dont recall wrongly, kitkat is a nick given particularly to abrotanoides, for it is almost a sure thing to turn brown ( in most reefers case ). Abrotanoides has a uniquely fat and sharly tappered shape - one of the most challenging SPS :heh:

How long did your last a.macrostoma last?

As we are on the subject of fussy SPS corals, in particular the Fiji and Aussie types, I will start another thread on it.

Of the few macrostoma i have tried, only one have survived more than a year and would likely to continue since i believe it has fully recover from shippment stress and acclimatised to the tank condition.

Other sensitive species that easily stn or rtn from shippment stress includes a.arabensis, convexa, vermiculata, nasuta, nobilis. They looks pretty similar to each other which leads to my suspicion that perhaps certain coralrite shape are relatively less tolerant to stress. Just a fun thought of it, no scientific reserarch on this area i suppose :)
