A wave make is kind like an extension with programmable timer/controller on each socket. Except it is a lot more versatile than a timer. You plug your powerheads into these sockets and program the on and off time to get the irragular current effect by switching on an off each power head. It is not a cheap item.

The tunze multi controller works in a similar way but at an even higher price. Eg 4 tunze connect to a multicontroller. But the Tunze is even more flexible as you can adjust the flowrate as well.

I am not stating that this method dont work, on the contrary they should work very well. Just I am not a beliver of switching equipement on and off as they tends to drastically short the lifespan of the powerhead.

If you are a DIY fan, try a search on a surge device. A simple device that creates waves by discharging a large amount of water at a rapid rate simulating a huge wave. It is a simple device that involve a pump which supply a 5gallon tub above the tank with water. The tub is install with something like a duso pipe which extend to the bottom of the tub.. when the water level reach above the duso, a siphon is created and the water is emptied into the tank. speed determined by the size of the pipe. siphon is broken when the water drop below the pipe. The frequency is controlled by the pump used. work like a flushing toilet just non stop.

This create a mini tidal wave and ensure no dead spot in the tank.
