that"s true.however,u don display ur main tank with too many live rocks, which will take a lot of space in displaying ur Exotic corals and freedom for the fish to swim.

-Main Display Tank : 2ft x 1.5ft x 1.5ft c/w sump tank cabinet (Set up by aquarium artist)

-Lightings : 4 sets of 1.5ft mini aqua lumen LED lights (7 high power led 15W)

-Chiller: 1/4HP artica chiller with a standby of HC-100A

-Skimmer : Bubble Magnus 3 (cone)

-Phosphate Reactor

-NP Bio-pellet D&D onceanic hang-on reactor

-Wavemaker : MP10

-Temperature mointor : American Wireless pinpoint thermometer

hey there, purpose of cycling is to breed the array of useful bacteria, so the more live rocks the better indeed.. but time is also an aspect for the bacteria to make love whistling.gif and populate the large amount of live rocks. ;) and not all live rocks are sold equal, some are more porous than others (the better ones), and some are just less.

tt's y if u visit some LFS u'll notice y some of their filtration system (sump) have an endless amount of live rocks as a filtration medium. some will have bags of Biohome, (really awesome stuff, esp the red 1s), Bioring, Bioballs, some claim Deep Sand Bed (2 camps on this), bio pellet etc.

so if u're a math person, reliable marine water + good bacteria medium (porous live rocs, biohome etc) + good bacteria supplements + time + plenty of patience is the function of cycling.

ah, i might be outdated though, but tt's the basic i reckon! but pls pls pls DON'T put a live fish during cycling period for it to provide food (it's waste) to feed the bacteria, use instead a deshelled prawn! (u will eventually c that the whole prawn rot away into nothing and the water eventually clear up, and tt's bacteria at work!)

btw, some of the live rocks would already have living things on it, so it will also die (from various shocks etc) and rot during this period, but be careful of pest that might survive this period and wreck havoc to ur tank later!

hope it helps! cheers.

Milch is right that by having more live rock does not always mean better bio filteratin, but getting larger surface area and porous live rock should be consider as well. By the way, Milch glad to see you back here LOL ...

General rule is one pound of LR per US gallon.

if there is a general rule of one pound of LR per US gallon does it mean that more live rocks will speed up the cycling process??

I am quite new into this as well.. so i had to ask this. i am currently cycling my tank with 2 pieces of dead rocks will that be a problem in the cycling process? will more live rocks speed up the process?

Too much rocks will also create more dead spots in the DT & restrict the flow in the tank.

Display Tank : 36" x 20" x 20" Herbie overflow box design, Sump : 36" x 21" x 17", Frag Tank : 16” x 20” x 16”, custom built by Tank Culture.

Lightings : Ecotech  Radion XR15 Pro x 2 for Main Display Tank, Inled R80 x 1 for Frag Tank.

Chiller : Dalkin 1hp compressor with build-in drop coil.

Skimmer : Skimz Octa SC205i Protein Skimmer.

FR : H2Ocean FMR75 Fluidised Media Reactor with Hailea HX-2500 (Feeder Pump) running Rowaphos.

CR : Skimz Monzter E Series CM122 Calcium Reactor.

Dont add too much live rock, also dead rocks won't help to cycle your tank. u need bacteria to kickstart the cycling process, which you get from the live rock. mix in dead rock and live rock and over time (can take mths) the dead rock will become live.

do we need to regularly change the rock?

No need, some reefers used their LR for years, some even decades, transferring them from old to new tanks.

It's up to individuals. Sometime ppl changed their LR cos they wanna rescape their tank as they have gonna sick of the aqua scape of their rock work.
