confused on sump media

Recommended Posts

I just started a tank, After reading through about sump tank I am a bit confused on what to put in the sump tank

My sump design is 1st compartment: wool & bio home

2nd : skimmer and chiller pump

3rd : refugim

4th : return pump to tank

Is coral chip necessary as just bought 10kg today, some say is maintain stable Ph some say is nitrate factory

is carbon needed?

If it is needed for coral and carbon where should it be placed?

Your advise is appreciated

Thanks for the input, how about activated carbon ? any usage and where should it be put?

coral chips and bio home does it function the same?

For carbon best to run in FR but for some they do put them inside a fine net bag and throw it inside the sump.

Nope coral chips and bio home do not serve the same function, coral chips more of buffer the ph for the water and bio home more towards reducing the NO3 and NH3 in the water.

Biohome, ceramic ring, bio house, etc.... all serve the same function.

Better to run filter sock then wool, the water is clearer and can effective trap more of the waste.

Carbon is consider chemical filtration and can be place after your mechanical or biological filtration for removing toxin and yellow strain in the water making it crystal clear . When the water is much more clearer , your corals will be able to get better lighting penetration from your lighting and grow better.

Coral chips and Bio home although both are filtration media, Bio home is man made engineered to house more bacteria in it's pore for more bacteria growth hence it allow waste to break down faster than coral chip. You can also consider the new Bacteria king in the market which is slightly cheaper than Bio home but work as good.

Hope it helps whistling.gif
