Hi, I have a rock in my tank that is growing some algae that is similar to the purple coraline algae: hard and encrusting. Except for the fact that it is green in colour. Is there such thing as a green coraline algae? I thought they are all pink and purple.

Coralline algae come in shades of red, pink, brown, green and purple.

Yellow and white are dead coralline mostly. When coralline dies, they turn white.

Apparently the colour of the coralline is highly dependent on the nutrients in the water, temperature, lighting kelvin and water quality. Among the colours, pink usually indicates good water conditions.

Strontium and kalkwasser dosing daily will promote an unusually high coralline algae growth.

There are even orange, yellow, white ones but i don't see them much in local tanks here except in pictures.

Alan, if it grows everywhere esp on glasses that rapidly, I'm afraid not all may be coralline. Perhaps mostly microalgae?
