Simple DIY conversation of FW to a QT tank

Was given 2 simple tank with a metal stand by a friend of mine which was used for freshwater previously, so decided to convert this into a simple QT tank to be used for quarantine or hospital tank . Just to share some of the photos which could be done easily and cheap to setup.

What you will need ;

1) Diamond glass hole cutter with drill - This would be used for drilling a hole for the overflow.

2) PVC piping

3) PVC cutter and glue

4) some filter media / bio ring

5) Some live rocks or piping for fish to hide

6) Lighting - optional but good to have in order to observe the fish for any sign of spot in the body

7) Skimmer - optional but good to have if you don't intent to change water regular.

8) Some Basic medication like Seachem paraguard and Cupramine

Some update of the progress..

Since the original freshwater tank was only 6mm thick, i have DIY additional bracing on top and side as a safety precaution.

DIY side bracing with aluminium plate and silicon.

DIY Top bracing and overflow piping.

Actually can just diy a hang on overflow pipe for those who dun want to drill a hole or no experience in drilling glass..

i made a mistake in the design of the overflow which the drainage hole should be drilled on the bottom of the glass rather than the side of the tank . This would prevent any leakage of spillage from the piping to fall back into the sump tank rather than out of the tank.

I would usually use seacherm paraguard and / or EIHO prazi gold during the QT period of newly bought fish. Fish is keep in the QT for at least 7 day to ideally 2 week before being release into my main tank. These two medicine should take care of the common found external or internal parasites on wild caught fishes.

During the QT period, it will be also the best time to train your fish to take pallet foods, or frozen foods few time a day to condition your new fish prior to introduction to your main tank. As an additional precaution , i will use also feed the new fish twice weekly with Dr G medicated food to flush away any internal parasites they might have.

Did you tape the glass that you going to drill with masking tape??

it seem like the drilling goes out of control when you start.....

it is better to lay the glass that you going to drill flat if possible and masking tape onto the future hole so that the hole saw does not move when you start. always go slowly at first and always cool the glass and drill bit with some water...

Hi Sunny, yes you are right and thanks for sharing the tips on using masking tape. It is difficult to drill on a flat glass especially from the side. Why is also why i mention that i make a mistake not to drill from the bottom of the tank instead. Water need to be constantly apply to the drill to cool the glass to prevent it from cracking .

I suggest that you better paint the steel stand with another coat of paint, as th way you go, the saltwater will cause the steel stand to rust at as very fast rate, leaving ugly rust stains on your floor.

Hi guys, for those looking for a diamond hole saw can go to kelantan lane couple of shop beside the frame / fish tank maker. Its the shop thats sells power tools. They have the most collection of diamond drills,and cheapest. Went looking around jln besar must say some prices of the diamond drill is eekensive,was quoted 4 red notes for a 28mm. Got mine @ kelantan lane for half the price. Do look around before buying and it's not that diffucult to drill a hole on glass,

The stand has been painted again prior to usage. This was mean for a short term holding term for QT purposes, and if there is no fish i may shut down the tank as a standby.

how do you do that? won't it be alot of try and error for the return pump flowrate? thanks for info
