I am intending to setup a mini refugium in my sump.

Whats next?

1) Need to buy sand or just cheato?

2) Will timer LED light to photoperiod for how long?

3) how should be the water movement from sump to refugium to sump?

Bro.. IMO u can fiil ur refuge with 5inches of sand and chaeto.

For the lighting keep it s/w ON for 16~18hrs.

Slow to moderate water movement will be good enuf.

IMHO, Chaeto needs moderate to high flow else it'll slowly die off even if u have long period of strong light.

Must I get refu soil or normal sand?

Water flow should be water flow through the top of the refu n to the next compartment of the sump. Right?

For mine, i just started with a handful of chaetos in a transparent

container placed inside a sump compartment that has sand n LR.The moderate flow it gets is from the return of my chiller

directed to the transparent container.

ok. will get those betta tank and stick on my sump.

Just wondering if the refugium glass surface started to grow coraline algae & other algaes, need to scrap off? cos i saw some ppl's refugium tank glass surface is quite clean. Afraid it will kill some of the pods if i scrap it off. :eyeblur:

Hope somebody can give me advice on this. :thanks:

Dun scrap off also can. Use can just use live rocks and chaetos.

I dun like sand as its messy.

How do u place/contain/tied the chaeto without it being blown away?

Cos right now i'm tying it to acrylic sheet using fishing string & use a small LR as counter weight on it.

Maybe my flow in my sump a bit too strong.

I prefer my chaeto to be freely tumbling in the water so that they get even light exposure. It needs to be FREE :yeah:

So installing a filter comb to keep it from washing away is a must.

I have filter comb installed but bits & pieces of it still able to flow thru it. Thinking of putting in mineral mud & a thin layer of live sand on top as substrate for refugium. Wondering if that would help?

If you can't find filter comb with smaller gap, then fitting a piece of sponge over the baffle should catch the bits & pieces. I'd avoid sand & mud in the refugium lest they choke up my return pump. But that's just my personal opinion.
