Algae on stone

Recommended Posts

  • 2 months later...

Just check with you all, mine is a new tank, top with NSW at first now is on the 2nd month, have done WC weekly with salt mix with of 10% . The reading of phosphate was at 0.03 on the 3rd week, nitrate alway at zero other then during cycling.

due to sps, I need to prolong the lighting period from 3 hour to 6 hour. Add phoshate removal last week and reading as follows and is quite constant

1) Nitrate : zero

2) Phospahte : 0.02 or undetectable very very light tinted blue if u look carefully using the salifert test kit

feed with hendry gourmet and a piece of seaweed daily once, 1 tang , i clown nad 6 damsel and one shrimp, and one clam

realise there are green patches start to appear on top of LR, and small feather like green algae started on my wave maker.

I have try growing chaeto in sump but not successful as I thought maybe the sump low in phoshate and nitrate as it has been taken care of with my NP reducing pellets,

PL light have been on on sump under chaeto for 10 hour daily, but now my chaeto all die off.

1)with phosphate and nitrate at low level there is still possible to have algae?

2) I realise last nite that there are algae below one of my big gonia coral , as i place one gonia on the top rock, once i remove my coral the LR below the area surface have very visible alage how can that be possible ? as that is the least light area?

thanks for all the advise

Bro, same problem as me....high nutrient in water.,..below are some things I have done.

1. Introduced a fleet of cleaning crews...shrimps, snail, starfish, urchin, but from my observation "best" is Tang...they eat non stop.

2. Start phosphate reactor to reduce the phosphate content...a bit kaisu...I added another bag of Rowa media in sump...

3. DIY using a metal mesh brush to scrup away the algae (brush can buy from diaso)

Hair algae seems to lessen now....will update as it get lesser....

for 2) Start phosphate reactor? I thought i use a bag of Rowa media in sump according to recommendation is good enuff? I have NP reducing pellets running 24/7. What you mean add another FR for phosphate reactor? Hmm dun think I have enuff space

3) Metal mesh brush? hmm u mean to scrub on LR in display tank? wow? can use tooth brush? cos if fill with coral then very hard liao in future

I also facing the same problem.... using phosban and ultralith with daily dose of ultrabak... somehow hair algae appearing too...

havent test NO3 and PO4 yet but i only feed a small pinch of reefpearl every other day... no idea why too... i just double up the dose of phosban (still within safe range) hoping it will be better...

i was reading on RC that if the algae consumes NO3 and PO4 it may continue to remain undetectable results on our test kits.... tangs tend to stop munching on algae if they eating the food you provide..... inverts seems to be a better choice.... if anyone finds a nice solution do update! :thanks:

Have to check your NO3 and PO4. And make sure they are zero with a reliable test kit.

If you using salt mix then make sure you are using DI water with reading close to zero.

I got that problem too... Most probably I use MH and most probably diatom bloom actually.

No3 n Po4 quite high too.. No3 more than 10ppm, Po4 around 0.3ppm.

I have 10 Turbo snails, 3 Red, Blue, Yellow/green pin cushion urchins.

Blue tang, Mimic tang, Foxface

Rowaphos dump in sump (no reactor, vodka dosing seems impossible due to DSB) to reduce phos, Prodibio Digest..

Now my tank reads No3 0.25ppm (Red Sea Tes).. Po4 Undetectable (API Test)..

Really should buy Prodibio Digest.. Good Product.. Will try the complete set next month

Thinking about getting Sea Cucumber for DSB..

I read that one need to dose both biodigest and bioptim together to be effective. You managed to reduce algae bloom with just biodigest? Do you think it is advisable to use it even if I do not run a skimmer?
