Recommended Posts

Hi to all fans in Sgreef,

A Very Happy New Year !

My tank often got algae grow on the stone and even after cleaning and brush away, it will still come back :(

Kindly advice me on how to deal with it? Any fish can do the job?

Recently due to lazy so did not check those parameter, will do a check tonight. This morning went to Ah Beng there and bot 1 bottle of API Algae Control solutiion, will probably try it out tonight.

By the way, anyone used that liquid to control the Algae? Safe for fishes and corals?

Thanks

Added API before, no use at all. Best to get a tang to finish it, if the algae is not too much.

Main cause is your water.

I don't think it work.

Even if it work it is only short term.

Best is to ensure your NO3 and PO4 is near zero.

And has a clean up crew to look after your tank

I guess more or less the algae problem is due to the high in NO3. Over the last few months, due to laziness, I neglect this tank and fishes all one by one death, I did not change water as frequent as before. Last week seek help to do a clean up and stock up some fishes , corals...

Yesterday I do a tap water with sea salt mix 25% change of water and do a check, NO3 still very high :(

The API I have added in twice, but did not do the job. Look! I got so many tang, don't seem of great help also

Will cheato be a good help?

Anyone or where I can get it from?

Thanks

If your NO3 is high then better do more regular water change.

Say 10% every 2 days.

At the same time add some clean up crews like turbo snail, abalone,

sea hare,bristle tooth,etc.

At the same time plug off as many of the hair algae as you can

I've tried the api on previous tank with lps n fishes. No problem.

u need to follow the regime. U will see the results in abt 3 to 4 wks. The algae will not disappear by itself. U need to siphon them out.

the api just kill the hair algae n makes it extremely easy to siphon them out as it seems their "roots" no longer anchor to the substrate.

If u read the wordings. Theres a clause for californian states blah blah blah cancer causing....

so wash yr hands real clean!!

I was at my last resort as the hair algae almost change my reef tank to planted tank

Tank size:36"x36"x24"

Return pump" 2x Reef Octo 5000

Skimmer:BK Double Cone 200 on Reef Octopus DC 5500s.

Wavemaker:2xVortech MP40wES

Chemical filtration:1xeducator FR(biopellets)

Chiller:1hp Daikin compressor.

Lighting:2 x Kessil A360we

Auto topup system: JBJ ATO + new jet 1200

Dosing system: Kamoer 3 channel.

Additives: ESV 2 part.

Power consumption

2XReef Octo 5000: 120watts

BK skimmer:50watts

2xVortech wavemaker:70watts

Daikin compressor:775watts

Lighting:180watts

would changing water with distilled water get rid of existing hair algae? (as opposed to stopping new ones from growing)

changing water with distilled water?

i think you meant changing with distilled water + salt mix instead of tapwater + salt. with the removal of no3 and po4, the existing hair algae would slowly die off (also with the effect of stopping new growth), so in a sense you are getting rid of the algae just it may take quite awhile for everything to die off.

manual removal + low nutrients + the help of some cleaning crew (for hard to reach places) seems to work best for me, but even then like i just mentioned, it still will take some time to remove all (or almost all) of the algae,

you could try to cover the algae with a piece of rock to deprive it of light, but (correct me if i am wrong), i think by doing this you could release nutrients back to yr tank. but this is only a short term solution. best way is deprive it of the nutrients it needs to grow.
